Did a lot of coaching practice at my old yard for just over two years, have just been asked to cover for the usual riding instructor during her summer holiday. She convinced me to look into it as the ponies are quirky and she wants someone who knows them to take on the task. I've looked around and it seems you can as long as you're covered by the yards insurance? Is this true? So if I'm covered by the riding schools insurance I can teach? I do have sports coaching qualifications. JSLA and finishing CSLA this year, but generic sport is so different to horse riding it seems crazy. At 17 I'll have to send off for a CRB too. My First Aid ran out this month (can't afford to redo) but there is a Level 3 NVQ in Horse care and Riding manager on the yard who I believe is the lead first aider anyway, she is also qualified to teach but is not confident doing it. Any help would be great. I've taught in emergency before when she has been ill or had to leave, but taking on 2 1/2 intense 8 hour teaching days leads me to quadruple check I'm all okay to go, the regulars and their parents know me and have always been happy for me to teach, I know I need to take into account that people are paying for this instruction and will have to be confident in me and my ability. So I need to clear this insurance issue up before I take it any further.

You do not need to be either qualified or insured to teach. However it obviously makes sense to be covered!

You may well be covered by the yard insurance but the owner/manager should check any stipulations the insurance company applies.

I believe you will need to be DBS checked if you're teaching under 18s.

Yes it is. It's very strictly governed though (much more so than CRB) so it's worth checking but I'm fairly sure you do need to be checked.

Completely agree about the insurance, especially with kids at a riding school! Get the owner/manager to check with their insurance company before you do it.

Haha, thank you! The kids know me and last time they got an outside instructor I think a few were traumatised!

It's not the kids I'm worried about, it's the parents! ;)
