Hello Tess has all of her legs clipped back ( she is a cob) as she used to have mites, this was treated with shampoo and they have now gone. However recently she has began to get scabby legs again, we are still washing with the mite shampoo etc so really don't think it is mites. I have been combing the scabs out and they tend to be behind her knees on the front legs.

At the moment it's way to hot to put the pig oil and sulphur on as it will burn her pink skin underneath :( After getting rid of the scabs yesterday we are washing her completely tonight and will do her legs again with the shampoo. Does anyone have any ideas of what we can put on them ? Have slapped some sudocream on in the past however that made it worse before it got better.

Thanks :)

It doesnt really sound like she has mites, more dermatitis or dry skin.

My old horse had really dry skin behind his knees and down the backs of his legs. Could it be that when your washing with the shampoo its not being rinsed out properley? I tried not to mess with his too much as if your constantly picking at scabs it wont heal either and thats when you will cause soreness and infections.

Maybe try E45 cream?

My cob has exactly the same thing. When I first got him his previous owners told me it was mud fever so I treated it as that. Turns out it was mites. He has full feathers still (bit in this heat I thin them out a bit as he gets hot) but what works for Bud is getting the Dectomax injection every 18 months/two years and regular trips to the beach.

There was a fantastic lady on here sent me some information years ago when I first got him. She had hairy beasties and had some great methods of dealing with their problems (some of them old fashioned remedies). I will did through my posts. Give me five minutes......

I'm back. It was Theresa_F but she hasn't been here since April so I'm not sure if she still comes on here. You could try.

Just thinking.. my sisters horse had scabs on her legs and after treating as MF and mites we got the vet to do a scrapping and it turned out she has vasculitis which isn't curable but it is manageable. You might be better to get the vet to do a scrapping to see what you are dealing with.

Have a look at this site and links, http://www.harlequinfarmsgypsyhorses.com/ChronicProgressiveLymphedema.html it helped greatly with my 2 who have this complaint - CPL - which includes vasculitis. If it's bad I mix 10% neem oil into vaseline and rub well in, this lubricates the skin, lifts off scabs and the neem kills off any bacteria lurking in there. If it's really bad apply plenty of this and wrap the legs in cling film, stable bandage over the top and leave overnight :-)
My oldest mare has been kept comfortable for 8 years since diagnosis and it hasn't progressed to the bad form, neither has she got any mites back - they don't like neem lol!!
The younger mare has never progressed past a bit of dry skin but I do use it on her every 2 weeks as a preventative.

Hi TB. Might be worth reading up on Neem oil. It should help with the mites as it gets rid of lice in humans but its also got antiseptic and anti biotic properties. It's not got the best smell in the world but I'm sure Tessy won't mind her legs smelling like 10 day old onion curry :) And it also deters flies so generally a useful product.
