Been trying to work out what I need to do to stay within the law but it just seems to be and endless stream of forms, tests and money.
I've got a 1990 7.5t 3 horse lorry. I have just started riding two horses which belong to an owner who pays me livery and a percentage of the costs to transport them. I compete both in the UK and Europe and would be transporting the horses the length of the country.
Can anyone tell me exactly what I need to do/have in order to stay legal?

If you are earning money as a result then yes, you would need the new CPC as driver/handler. You may also need a restricted operators licence!!!

If you are simply taking petrol money then that doesn't apply.

Actually thinking about it, restricted licence wouldn't apply as the horses don't belong to you (covers own goods), but if you are transporting other peoples horses for financial gain, you may have to look into national operators licence - best to check with VOSA

You will need a international operators licence as you take your lorry abroad

You will need the International DEFRA Lorry Approval Certificate for your lorry

You will need your ACET (advanced certificate in equine transport)

Insurance wise you will need

hire and reward
Care custody and control
Public liability
and if you carry anyone on the lorry whether you employ them or not you will need employers liability for the lorry
