Went to feed shop today, only to find the instant linseed cake I buy is now over £20 a bag! So bought the stuff that needs cooking.

Hmm, now sat here with bag of linseed, big stock pot and not sure what to do next!

Does it need soaking overnight before boiling? I'm sure I read that somewhere. How long do I boil it for, and how much do I feed once boiled?

Sorry for all the questions! x x

ive never cooked linseed on its own, but we do put it in withour barley which we just put it in a pot covered by about an inch of water and whack it in the bottem of the aga for about 7hrs, dont know if that helps but hey, i tried! good luck
!

i cant quite remember the ins and outs of boilin linseed but i have a feelin you must soak it for a while 1st, be very careful as linseed contains bacteria that is very harmful if not cooked properly!!!

I used to soak it overnight then boil it hysterically for 15mintes then simmer for several hours. It then ends up as a sort of jelly gunge with seeds.

It is poisonous if not cooked properly and must be used the same day after cooking.

It boils over, boils dry, wrecks the saucepan... honestly buy the cooked flaked stuff!

just out of interest how much was a sack of linseed ?

The uncooked stuff was £18 for nearly double the amount of lozenges

Simple terms .... Stick 2 cups of it into a microwavable bowl ... Cover completely with water . Bung it in the microwave for 20 minutes , Stopping 10 minutes and making sure it isnt over boiling .

I find the last 3 minutes is the time that it starts to overboil .

I have used this method for 2 years now, No poisoned horse yet

Flaked stuff is cheaper than the lozenges (I feed both but only because my two think the lozenges are "treats").

You can get it from a number of places - Charnwood Milling seems to be quite reasonable but I use the Equus stuff.

So much easier than boiling it!
