I am offering a stable at my home for a DIY livery.
I have never been on livery as ive been fortunate to be able to keep my lot at home and I know very little about it, especially the legal side of it.
What should I put in the Agreement? Have ever experienced any problems which you wish had been in the aggreement? please let me know, I want this to be easy and pain free in the long run.
Thanks

Are you a BHS member? I'm sure they have alegal helpline which could offer advice.
Re livery agreement, make sure you have insurance ,the NFU should be able to help.
I've had liveries in the past ,when we lived on a farm, some 20 years ago now. My main problem was people not feeding their horses enough,eg 16hh horse,1 slice of small bale hay to lat it all night, and not buying enough bedding, really skimping on that. This person BTW,was BHS qualified and should have known better. Also people feeding bucket feeds at different times and distressing the other horses which wernt being fed. Not turning out or exercising the horses, leaving them stood in till late sat and sun morning, people turning up late at night. People not paying on time, people saying they'd paid for hay they'd not had and getting free bales out of us.
I dont want to do liveries again, but if I did I'd make sure they paid by DD,at least 1 month in advance,it wouldnt be DIY but part assisted, I would do the morning feeds and turn out,for example. Also, adequate hay and bedding would be included in the price.
Hope this helps.

There's a draft livery agreement on the BHS website which you can download; a lot of it won't be applicable to DIY livery but you can always leave out what you don't want.

I offer DIY livery, and it's that, DIY and no more!!! Some people try to take the piss and you'll end up "doing" for everyone's horses if you're not careful. I tell them when they come to see the place, that its strictly DIY and that I won't touch their horses at all.

In the livery agreement, you need to include that the horses must be kept in good condition and with the BHS draft agreement you can stipulate how often they come, i.e. twice a day, once a day etc; also that the horses must be wormed, vaccinated and shod regularly.

You need also the have an emergency clause, i.e. if something awful happens, that you have the right to call the vet and he/she will decide on what action should be taken, including if the animal is suffering, pts, and the owner is liable for all costs thereof.

At my place, because of sheep, I also insist on dogs under control and no children under 16 without supervision.

Also include period of notice, return of deposit etc., and that they are liable to pay costs if their horse damages fences or anything.

Its a minefield, but can work to your benefit!
