Hi all,

I've got a very itchy horse, he does itch in the field but it's nothing to be concerned about. However, when he's in the stable he goes absolutely nuts tryin to itch! Now he does his all year round not just in summer! Even when there's a foot of snow on the ground.

I have noticed today after he was itching and nearly pushing over our monarch stable walls that he has 2 large lumps under his 'chin' these lumps are nowhere else and are where he scratches, they are warm, and have flakey skin on them.

So I have bathed him absolutely everywhere in medicated shampoo, an put him back in the stable. He started itching again. But just on his tail.

I rang the be on Wednesday and he thinks either microscopic mites, photosensitive dermatitis, or allergy.

Now he's been bathed in medicated shampoo, I want to treat for mites. I've heard thy front line spot on works, but I'm unsure as to how much to use on him as he's standing 14.2 (he's a youngster)

I wa just wondering what you guys think this itching could be? And if anyone does recommend front line, how much do you use?

Help is greatly appreciated and I'm now very concerned about him and just want to make him comfortable! He's always been itchy since 4 months old the day I got him, he hasn't got live as these were treated for when I first got him. And like I said he's like this all through te year, and also when there is absolutely no flies. He's also not fed a thing throughout the year over than grass and hay! He's a very good doer!

Help!!!

They are coming on Wednesday to take bloods ad skin. He's sure it's either mites or photosensitive dermatitis. But red up of photo sensitivity and they all say it only effects the white skin, but he's itching his brown Markings too, is it heard of that it could effect dark areas too?

I have the most itchy mare in the entire land!!! (or so it seems) she will scratch on anything she can get to and has made herself bleed on several occasions. The vet has been several time and taken all the tests, skin bloods hair swabs etc and they have all come back negative so she said she has an allergy!! possibly just to life she said this week!! she is currently on steroids after being on everything else and we are just waiting for these to kick in,, out on a hack last week and she literally planted herself on a tree and scratched pinning my leg against it and breaking her skin again!!! this is all year long and so frustrating as otherwise she is a little beauty...sorry not much help but we have to just try to manage her problems!

Help!!!

My cob was very similar to this he scratched until his skin was raw, tried medicated shampoo, removed feathers and shampooed, used Pig Oil and Sulpher, sterilized stable - nothing worked.
Vet came out and advised that it may be the case that another horse is carrying the mites but are not affected by them and when my boy is with them (in field etc) he is reacting.
He advised that they can give an injection for mites however the injection is not licensed for horses only cattle, but with consent they can give it - best thing i ever did - he has not scratched once! :)

Hmm thanks for that! Do I just request it from the vet? I know there is an anti itch injection they can give them but never heard of this! Will defo be mentioning to my vet!!!! X

Friend got given a horse that was so itchy he'd rub himself raw. He had to be rugged or he'ds bite himself and if he was tied up he just bite raw patches on his skin. Turns out he was allergic to Alfa-A whcih previous owner had been feeding him on. Took him off it and he now doesn't itch and has a lovely skin and coat albeit flecked with white I suspect from all the scratching he'd done before

My friends mare ver extremely itchy, vet diagnosed her with liver problems. She's now on milk thistle supplement and she's back to normal :)

My girl had the injection last friday, Vet said it was unlicenced and only for cattle so must be the same one, but no change still scratching herself the vet said it was worth a go as its only about £19 so we tried it but back to standing over her when in the yard, so hoping the steroids work as cannot give her them long term! some people have said its the extremes of weather we are having causing mayhem, as she was not this bad last year at all....

It is really weird, he can be tied up in the barn- we have internall stables, and not scratch at all! But as soon as he goes in the stable he scratches like mad for about 10 minutes! X

He's just on grass an a little bit of hay. He's an extremely good doer, I can't see it being he hay though as he's also been on haulage and was no different!

Just find it do strange how he only does it in the stable!!! What's the milk supplement she's on x

That sounds as though he is allergic/reacting to something in the stable. Has the inside been painted/disinfected? What is the bedding? Or the bedding next door? Is someone using a fly spray in the stables?

I would look down this route before medicating your horse.

He's on bliss bedding, but did the same when on wheat straw and barley straw. The horse next door is on straw, and people do use fly sprays so allergy is a possibility, might put on shavings to see if this works! Thank you all for your advice!!!

The only thing that ha stayed the same is the fact he's been on straw- albeit it's bliss but that straw right?

Also I bathed him yesterday wih medicated shampoo and brought him in tonight and he was lnt half as bad, but he did still have his rug on? And was only scratching his bum? Am goog to treat tomorrow with front line.

Hes also been scratching under his mandible for the past few months, and he came in yesterday with a swelling in the jaw groove, one side and has a centre of flakey skin in a circle. This is nowhere else on his body and is slightly warm- he also doesn't like you touching it. He absolutely fine in himself- no temperature so in thinking maybe a fly bite gone wrong? X

He's been on wheat straw, barley straw and now currently on bliss, I'm going to my local saddlery tomorrow and getting shavings and he's also ring treated with front line tomorrow

It could be an infected tick bite on his jaw, or even ring worm!
A few years ago i kept ferrets, and after getting a new bale of straw was very surprised to find them covered in tiny ticks!!
Just a thought! :)
