Hi

My horse was diagnosed with a quater crack
8 weeks ish ago
It was left to grow down a bit I was walking in hand - he was doing very well
Then he went crazy and made it worse
It did bleed a little
But the vet said for farrier to fill crack
He then got an infection
Now we have been poulticing to get the infection out
this is where I am at the moment
My farrier wants vet to come again before he touches the horse again
Hes feet arent insured
Vet has said - fill it maybe see how it went , then if that doesnt work maybe de nerve the horse - my vet was on holiday and so hes partner came when the infection occured he said maybe turn him away when he can be turned out see how it goes.

I am at a loss and trying to find the best thing!
Then I thought maybe Rockley Farm?
But it is so far away as I live in Romford Essex x

I will take any advice

Get a new vet. Denerve for a quarter crack??? At this stage of treatment??? Good grief!!!

Leave the crack open so that it can be disinfected. Filling it was a mistake, clearly. Disinfect it once or twice a day by squirting in large quantities of hydrogen peroxide at 3 % dilution. You can buy it at 30% - 100 vol on eBay, which you water down by TEN to get it the right strength.

If it is not healing from the top down, find a farrier who can stabilise it by putting a brace across it. This can be done either with a bent nail or by screwing on a strap.

Meanwhile, get the horse onto a perfect high fibre low sugar diet and supplement with Pro Hoof from Progressive Earth on eBay. Do not allow it too much spring grass, keep it in during the daytime if you possibly can. Soak any hay for 24 hours before feeding.

I hope that helps. Neither your farrier nor your vet seem to know what they are doing. I think I remember your photos of this crack and it was intermittently bleeding. It should never, under those circumstances never have been filled - precisely because that would be asking for an infection under the filling.

Ditto cptrayes. How will filling the crack or de nerving put the hoof right? Diet, diet and diet first and foremost.

I agree with cptrayes and would be interested to know what farrier and vet your using I used to keep my horses in Havering Atte Bower, my old farrier was very good still have his number if you want it.

Try an equine spa, it will improve the process, flush the area and the hoof growth is really good, It also has epsom salts in the water. Diet and foot care is really important too.

Please put some photos on for some extra advise

some pictures
sorry they arent great

Don't seem to be able to see the photos - might just be me.

These won't be exactly what you are dealing with, but are examples of extensive damage that can be grown out without any special intervention at all.

http://danceswithgrace.blogspot.co.uk/2009/10/six-weeks-off-hind.html this horse had been shod

http://barefoothorseblog.blogspot.co.uk/2011/02/hoof-cracks-update.html (this grew out completely and is now completely 'normal')

http://barefoothorseblog.blogspot.co.uk/2010/09/story-of-abscess.html - this is an abscess but the owner had been advised to pack etc - but there was no need

I can't see them either.

I always love that abscess story the pics are fab LucyPriory. There is so much focus on the cosmetics of hooves when it's all pointless imo and even causes problems sometimes. Getting the hoof healthy should be the priority.

i dont know why i cant post pics - i will put them on twitter and post my twitter link x you should see them then, thats how i had to do it before

there is also a bit of filler left on the hoof not in the crack tho - its the cream patches on the hood, vet must have missed it when he rasped it off

My cob Apollo had a massive quarter crack when we got him - the farrier (old school) haed been burning it out every time - and making it worse

We got a proper surgical farrier who excavated the crack, gave us fluid to treat it with - squirt in the top and let gravity do it's work, and he pinned it using things that looked like big toothed staples.

That fixed it.

Air - the enemy of these little bugs.
