Wondered if you have heard or had anything like this before?! My 18 year old mare seems to be having a false pregnancy!!! She is on regumate at the moment and has been since April. She is fine in herself, but turned a bit grumpy again lately (reason she didn’t s currently in regulate) on the ground and has started producing milk!!! I’m going to contact vet tomorrow, but just wondered if you had ever heard of this before? She defo isn’t pregnant as she hasn’t run with any stallions since I have had her for the last 3 years.

I heard of this from someone who bred one of mine in Ireland. They had, they thought, one final foal, only it turned out to be no foal...

They were experienced breeders too.

What did they have to do? Do I just let it pass or could it be something sinister? X

I don't know. I had lost my lovely horse that they'd bred so contacted them to see what they had. They told me that they thought they'd bred one out of the same dam but had not. I don't know the details other than they felt silly as they really thought they'd bred a foal.

Personally, I'd call a vet.

Yep, my oldest mare began to do this when she was on a yard with very rich grass and an additional mare was put into the field with her and my then young mare. Old mare displayed extreme protection type behaviours keeping newly introduced mare away from my young mare and I honestly believe these two things triggered a heightened normal response and she produced milk for a long time afterwards with no ill effect.
