My boy has been totally barefoot for about three years now, he was been bare behind for alot longer i think about 8 years. His feet have been fine until the last 12 weeks and now they are breaking a crumbling away, taking big chunks out and hes started being footy. I have been trying to keep them as tidy as possible but getting worried now. He pretty much self trims and the farrier sees him whenever i think hes required, normally every 16/20 weeks or so. He does have deviations on the fronts.

He is 23yrs old we think a welsh D x Appy, he is black rabicano in colour and arthritis in his left hock and quite possibly in other areas due to age. He is not a good doer and this is the first time in two years or so I would say hes at a good weight, can still see (when moving) and feel ribs no crest nor 'gutter' in his butt, no fat pads, his belly looks a bit droopy but his back is no longer the tabletop it was but the schooling is bringing him back into shape that way.

He was being ridden four times a week but due to him being kicked then footy this has dropped off over the last three weeks. He is now back in work building back up, he normally gets a minimum of an hours hack three times a week in all gaits and one schooling session with or without poles.

Feed wise hes getting the recommended amount of Veteren Vitality, his supplement of Turmeric, Cinnamon, Chasteberry, Glucosamine Chondroitin and MSM (mixed by me), linseed meal and a handful of readigrass to stop him bolting it ( wary of colic/choke). This is split into two feeds am and pm.

If he is not getting ridden as much, he is probably not wearing the hoof as much, so it is cracking off instead.

Those bits that have broken off wouldn't be an issue to my lot. They never seem to be affected if they break chunks of hoof of themselves, but if the farrier takes a bit too much off they are.

I wonder if the grass is very rich at the moment and that coupled with his rest due to the kick has caused the footyness?

Thanks for your replies. I'm hoping this is maybe us hitting horn that isn't quite so good and it's going to be a blip. Our grass isn't lush and is very patchy due to the field bring a 365 one. It was topped for the buttercups about 5weeks ago and hasn't really been allowed to grow much since.

I'm certainly looking into perhaps doing a weeks test of in during the day and out at night to see if this changes anything.

Nice feet; love that natural look.

HP angles OK, no long toe, nice frogs, but some flaring especially medial flare on left front.

Flares can be easily controlled and thus white line integrity retained with cosmetic roll.
