Hoping for some advice with my con by gelding. He's just coming back into work after some time off lame due to pastern problems. Is now sound with remedial shoeing. Has been hacking in walk only for 6 weeks and we can now build this up with some short trots too the only problem is he's a psycho in open space and thinks he should be galloping everywhere! As soon as we hit grass etc he jogs, grunts, goes sideways and canters on the spot and has even bolted off before he's always been a bit strong and feisty out hacking but this is ridiculous :-( it's now making me not want to hack him! I've tried a few stronger bits and he has worn a standing martingale before but it's also a psychological problem I think. Any ideas how to overcome this? Thanks in advance :)

I'm afraid I mightn't be of much use but have tried lad hacking out with another horse (or 2). Maybe if you head out with a steady ned and let the level headed horse go behind your lad, he'd be in less hurry to do himself damage hulaganing around the place if it means he'd be leaving company behind?

Forgot to mention about that he's exactly the same in company :( although sometimes it's better as there's someone to block his path if needed and I have a bum to aim at lol!

Could you lead him out from another horse? Its a good way to bring back into work after injury, as long as the ridden horse is nice and steady.

Teach him to yield to one rein, then the other, then use this to turn him tight. This will disengage his hindquarters and bring him to a halt. Do this every time he gets strong. He'll soon learn to calm down. Knowing you can stop him will give you more confidence to ride him.
