Help - flies/trees/water??

Hi - I could do with some advice please! We have just found the house of our dreams, with land, but the grazing land is very long and thin and surrounded by conifer trees. There is also a pond nearby, and I'm worried that the two together will create horrendous fly problem in the summer. We have walked around the place twice both in pretty wet and warm conditions, and I didn't notice a single fly, but not sure if that means that they will not all swarm to the area as soon as nice tasty horse flesh is on offer?!
I don't know what to do really, as I love the property, but I don't want to have problems in the future, especially as my boy is really sensitive to fly bites.
Do you think the trees and pond will be a problem or am I overreacting?!

I think the trees and pond could well be a problem for your sensitive boy, the tress on their own should be ok as long as not in too much abundance but i would get rid of the pond

Thanks... the trees are fairly abundant unfortunately - basically it is an area of of Forestry Commission woodland!! The land hasn't been grazed before, and the current owners bought it as a development project, so it's not like I can ask them what it was like for horses

I would get some taken down if you can if there are really that many, as beautiful as it sounds, it is best to have a simpler pasture when horses are grazing imo. It will keep your OH busy

Lol yes, not sure if I would trust him with that - tree felling is a little different to putting up picture hooks

The only complication is you have to have permission from the Forestry Commission to fell any trees

the pond might cause problems, but the woodland shouldn't be too much so as its conifer rather than deciduous.
Our horses are in a very deciduously wooded area with pond and stream - we find that whilst we have lots of nuisance flies we only have horseflys in the one field that is in the wood and next to the stream/pond.

where abouts are you maybe moving to?

It is in Everingham (near Pocklington). The two fields run alongside a small area of conifer woodland, one of them you could describe as being 'in the wood' as the trees on each side are fairly thick. It is also closest to the pond (maybe 50m away at one end). The other borders the wood on one side but just has a thin fringe of trees along the other which separates it from the road. Both are quite narrow so difficult to get away from the trees! We would need to build stables and these would also be fringed by trees.
