My sister informed me last night that for some time now her horse has developed bald patches on her flanks and hip area. They are not sore and the skin has not broken but the hair has gone and left it bald.
I have asked her to check the usual things such as lice etc and also recommended that she has a look at the inside of her rug and give it a really good sweep off of hair and dust...I am thinking that because she has not cleaned her rug (she only has one) for 2 winters and apparently it is covered in hair...that it might be irritating her????
She has not been treating the area with anything as the skin is not broken, however I have recommend she puts something on it to promote the hair to grow back (and a vet visit could be in order).
Any advice on this and what she can put on it? Unfortunately she can not afford expensive lotions and potions so I have recommended something Aloe Vera based...or can anyone remind me of that skin cream that you all seem to use that you can get at the chemists?
Thanks

No, not clipped...hairy coloured cob of ageing years...in at night with no rug and out during day with rug on (not the best of rugs either, quite old fashioned coarse one).

Ahh, just wondered. I know that some of the horses on my yard that are rugged and out 24/7 quite often get patches of hair rubbed out. Particularly where the hair has got a little thick etc.

I suspect that either way, your sisters rug has something to do with it. Is she in the market for a new lighter one?? The hair will only grow back if not being agitaged .

i suggest you reccommend to your sister to buy her horse a new rug or get the old one cleaned and borrow one until it is ready this my be agitating the horse as all that hair stuck to the rug will stick in her horse!

Yes...that is what I thought too, get a better rug of more modern materials...money is a big problem for her...but that is another story. I have offered to send her a £10 Derby House voucher I have towards it, but it is up to her really.
Any ideas on any cream to put on to help promote new hair growth?

This has happened to a horse I know of. They're using Hibiscrub on it and then Gold label soothing gel (has tee tree in it).
TBH I would do the same, ensure rugs aren't rubbing, then clean the area daily and apply a soothing gel.

Hi,

I know it sound weird but cornucrescine has allways worked for me . I find its rubbish for hoof growth but great for hair.

My boy had baldy bits (inflicted by me and my nagging legs...) cornucrescine had worked wonders (3 weeks later no bald bits) BUT obviously the root cause has to be dealt with too...
