Hi all.

On my drive to the stables yesterday morning I saw a pony at the side of the road (a common place where gypsies go) so didnt really think any more of it.

Went pass again this morning and stopped for closer inspection. A little colored colt tied up SHORT to a gate all on his own just with a thin piece of rope round its neck. Gippos havent been here for a while and plus they always keep them in groups in sight of there caravans and tethered properly. Not tied short up to a gate. So I can only presume its been abandoned? It makes my blood boil!!!!!

Have given it some hay and water (poor thing starving and v.thirsty) and have rang rspca but as its on 4 feet they dont want to know as they said they are too busy?

So, what to do from here? Does anyone have any other contact numbers? If it comes down to it I'll ring my YO to see if I can put it in a spare empty field until I can sort something out. Cant leave the poor thing tied to a gate at the side of the road, plus less than 50m away is a big deep river and the snow is terrible here. would never forgive myself if he ended up in there.

Rest assured he is content for now with a bucket of warm water and plenty hay. If anyone has been in a similar situation ten I would love your advice and if not I shall keep you all posted as to how we get on xx

Well done for doing something. Thats the second post this morning ive read where the rspca wont do anything. Useless.
Try WHW?

Whereabouts in York - is it near Monks Cross, there were tonnes of ponies there last week.

I would just take the poor thing and give it a nice field with hay tbh, if it was left near me, I'd have led it straight home :)

its near haxby/towthorpe area. a usual place for gypsy horses but this one is totally alone and as I say, they never leave them on there own here tied up short. hes close to where i live (i'd put him in the garden for now but its too small!) but unfortunately not near my yard - like i say, if need be I'll get him to my yard until i can sort something out

I'm sure it's a coincidence but I'm at Seaton Ross, and a pony cob was moved from a field of donkeys yesterday - would only be 11/12 hands - assuming it was a weanling, b/w - mainly white.

It was moved by what I assumed were it's owners though.

Can you post a pic - is it a b/w weanling cob, mainly white but black on it's head? 11/12hhs?

It appeared in a field with donkeys nr Seaton Ross a while ago and I saw what I assumed were its owners moving it yesterday - but they are a notorious bunch.

I wondered if it was dumped in their field and they were just returning it!?

I'm not too far away (Everingham), no equine transport but would be willing to help?

PM if I can be of use!

I think hes a bit older and poss a bit bigger than than 11/12hh, piebald. lots of mane/feather. I wouldnt say hes mainly white, its about 50/50 black and white.

rang a couple of places who are all full/cant do anything. I'd take it to my place til we can sort something out, just dont want to get done for theft!

There's an article in this weeks H&H about abandoned equines; this is a difficult one, particularly as other posts on here have not suggested that RSPCA/WHW or other welfare organisations have been helpful, coz I gather they're not.

This is something DEFRA and/or BHS should be looking at IMO: its a problem that isn't going to go away and why SHOULD people take in abandoned horses just because we feel sorry for them? Of course, we do, and nothing will be done about it.

The BHS are doing their usual: keeping schtum and doing FA about it.

If it belongs to the Irishman than it will have been moved to Rosethorpe, they would not return it to anyone! They sell them from Rosethorpe - anything you want!

National Equine Welfare Council advice below--no easy answers and agree this will get worse before it gets better.

Dealing with the abandonment of a horse or pony

The Animal Welfare Act 2006 confers a Duty of Care on all owners and keepers of animals and prosecution may be taken against an owner or keeper not meeting the needs of an animal.

All cases of abandonment are different.

A horse or pony may be found abandoned on a road, in a field or be abandoned whilst in livery.

As no two cases are the same, a general outline of relevant information can be found http://www.newc.co.uk/advice/docume...oc?PHPSESSID=12d227e5ed61667ee45636ca2b441f1f
and a sample of an Abandonment Notice can be downloaded http://www.newc.co.uk/advice/documents/AbandonmentNoticeWeb.pdf

It is adviseable to make contact with either the NEWC office or one of the specialist equine welfare organisations for specific advice on your individual problem.

Whatever course of action you decide to take, it is imperative to keep a paper trail and records of money spent or received, expenses incurred and actions taken (such as veterinary treatment, vaccinations, worming and so on) for several months afterwards. There will always be the remote possibility that the owner may come forward in the future wishing to reclaim the horse (if the horse has been stolen before it was abandoned, they may have spent months looking for their equine). Here the law becomes even more complex and if an agreement with the owner cannot be reached, you may need to take legal advice to resolve the situation satisfactorily.

Bloomin fine mess this is........

Ive contacted the local police who were actually very nice on the phone. They are going to make a few phone calls and then get back in touch with me. I have said if the worst came to the worst I could put it up until they can find somewhere for it to go. Poor thing.

As above if you move it you become responsible, end up spending a fortune only to find someone comes to claim it back again.
Just sorry I cannot be more helpful

I deal with the North Yorks police with regards to horses fairly regularly - I'm on their call out list to help deal with stray horses.

They will do what they can, but I am sure they would be happy for you to take him under your wing in the meantime. After all, they'd much rather he wasn't tied up next to a road in case he gets loose!

Like I said - if I can do anything to help just shout!

police have called to say they are ringing round everywhere tey can to try and find who owns this pony. in the meantime, the police called a local farm round the corner with outbuildings etc and they have said they will accomodate the pony if needs be. the police have also said they will keep me updated with any news.

Im going to keep feeding and watering the pony and if hes not at the farm by tonight will ring again to see whats happening

Oh poor little lamb. Well done you for helping him. I come to uni in York but I live a good 80/90 mins away so am probably not much help. Do keep us posted on what happens to him.

Who would do such a thing? I just don't understand how people do these things...

I wish to god they would bring in a lincensing act for horses, it's getting out of control.

Also, just a thought - have you thought about going to the local newspaper with the story?? Sometimes they're interested in these things and it might a) shame the owners/dumpers and b) find him a decent long term home..? Though obv a secondary concern to his immediate welfare.
