My little rabbit was nearly got by a fox in our garden today, she was absolutely terrified.
So does anyone know of any way to deter foxes (from a reasonably large area)?

They were talking about foxes on radio 2 this lunchtime and someone said human hair in old tights scattered round the garden is supposed to deter them! Isn't lion poo from the zoo meant to keep them away too?

I never forget at my old yard when I was younger. A whole load of us had rabbits in hutches in a designated area. One morning we arrived to find all the rabbits had been eaten by what we presumed were foxes :( Except my rabbit! The hutch was open but my rabbit was still there. She was evil and I could only pick her up with gloves on, so think the fox had second thoughts! :D

I was just reading that over the next week or so we are having freezing artic winds coming over, so may be nice to bring her in. Or do you have a shed you could put the hutch in over night?

Depending on the area and amount of foxes you could cull. If they are coming this close to the house they are only going to get worse as the weather gets harder and their foodstock dries up.

We had a 'fox proof' chicken pen. Fox still managed to get in and kill all the chickens...it just couldn't get out with them.

Failing that, isn't there a high pitched contraption you can buy? The noise deters them but humans can't hear it. Put fox deterrent into google and see what happens!

Good luck

A fox will NOT go past creosote, any entry holes need spraying with the stuff. This is from my own practical experience by the way,and a huntsman told me this trick, which proved absolutely true.

Thanks for all the ideas, will def give some of them a go.

She actually lives inside most of the time and is shut in the kitchen at night, but she loves her freedom when she goes out in the garden. We used to put her out loose, but she'll have to go in the run now, if out at all, because the foxes probably can/will dig under it.

Are you not scared a cat will get her either? I am honestly not being funny, we have a Guinea Pig (Who I love to bits and woe betide anything that tried to get him) We keep him indoors all the time through the Winter but in Summer he is put out in a secure run and I am always making sure he is supervised (Mad I know) but it terrifies me that a cat, because there are plenty round here will somehow manage or even a loose dog which we get from time to time let alone a fox! We never see foxes though. :)
