I’m going to start from the beginning :

I own a 6 year old cob ( never any previous medical issues ).

At the start of January we moved to our own new yard ( it was a big change for him ). The pony we have as a companion really dislikes him so we are on the hunt for another.

About 4 weeks ago we put him on soaked hay after the frost ( he stopped drinking his normal amount of water and he was trying to urinate a bit more than normal ). Then a week later he became very gassy ( he was left out in the nice weather for an extra couple of hours ). Then we rang the vet and he told us to starve him but as a result of him not drinking water he got an impaction. Impaction cleared when we got the vet out 3 times over the 2 days.

Then a week ago he was gassy again but this time I didn’t cut out the sloppy feed and he returned back to normal. Bear in mind he is still not drinking but he is getting four watery feeds and soaked hay a day. We took a full blood count yesterday and everything came back clear apart from the red blood cell count ( RBC 6.04, PCV 29.5 AND hb 10.5 ). Our vet thinks it’s gastric ulcers due to stress so my boy started gastroguard and iron today. And he said he is probably bleeding internally from the ulcers and there is extra protein from the bleeding in the gut so that is why he is gassy. His faeces is slightly darker and smaller balls than normal. We are waiting on the feacal test.

BUT the vet can’t explain the extra peeing over the last few days and I’m so worried ?, our boy is fine in every other way, heart rate, temp. Ect. Is normal but he is a tiny bit lethargic especially when he coliced. I’m not experienced with this sort of thing and I just want my boy to be okay, any thoughts ?

What's his water? Is it tap water? Is it rain water? Does it become more palatable if you add a dash of mint essence, sugar or apple juice to it?

If he had been older I would be inclined towards cushings. It is not unheard of in young horses but is rare.

I lost a 6 yr old Shire to what I now believe was undiagnosed Cushings, please ask your vet to do the blood test. But don't panic, that could be nothing to do with your horse's problems, it's just something to rule out.

If you are soaking hay a horses water intake will reduce quite a bit so I wouldn't be too worried about that for now.

What is the grass like that they are now on? It makes a huge difference to water intake!

I have tried everything ? I have tried apples, apple juice and he has a salt lick, nearly has most of it gone but he never touched his water, im at my wits end !

We did a full blood test yesterday and all was clear apart from the low red blood cells which makes him anemic, does a specific blood test have to be done for Cushing's ? or is it just diagnosed when a full blood work up is done ?

No he only drank about an inch when the grass was dry, but his bloods show no sign of dehydration only anemia and he has been peeing way more than normal.

If his bloods don't show dehydration then he's getting enough fluid.
Is he peeing more frequently or peeing more volume?

He has been peeing more frequently with a normal volume but the pee is more clear in colour and over the last 2 days I have caught him trying to pee ( like he was when he was colicing ) and I have caught him peeing twice in the space of 20mins over the last 2 days

I would wonder if he's trying to pass a urinary calculus which could have developed due to previous dehydration.
There may be two things going on.

ETA.. This could all be a vicious circle. Pain from a urinary stone could cause stress and ulcers. It could definitely cause colic.

We lost a 8yr old to cushings induced Laminitis. His ATCH levels were over 300

Would that show if we get a urine test done ?

A specific test is needed, a general blood test won't pick cushings up.

Thank you !
