Hello! My mom and I have been scratching our heads since my yearling was born, trying to figure out what he would be classified as, color-wise. His mother is a grey mare with little flecks of chestnut, and his dad was a grulla paint, as far as we know. He kind of escaped from our neighbor and snuck into our pasture. Anyway, here's the colt in question:

I apologize for the poor lighting. His coat seems like a pale buckskin color with splashes of white that are kind of hard to see. He's got the dun stripe and also a little bit of tiger striping on the inside of his back legs. The front of his face is white. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for taking the time to look. :)

He is very pale. :)

I can see stripes on the back of his knee in the first photo and as his sire was a grulla/dun it does make sense that he has inherited Dun from his sire. I can see signs of sabino too.

Do you know what colour his dam was before she greyed out (eg could she have the cream or silver gene, now hidden by the grey)? I'm just wondering whether he could have another dilution gene as well as Dun (and agouti)?

The white patches on his side could be because of the sabino or possibly Frame as the spine seems to be free from white bits.

Are there any signs of him greying out?

If you were in the UK, you could get away with calling him Skewbald. :p :D

I'm not sure about his dam, I've only had her for three years, and by that time she was already grey. All I know is that she's got the little flecks of chestnut, and her tail is somewhat orange. I'm afraid I don't currently have a clear picture of her, except for this old one.

Oh, sorry about the vague answer. I was in the process of getting ready for work. Yes, I believe he's greying out. On one side of his neck it looks like roaning. Thank you so much for all of your help, and perhaps I'll look into that DNA test after all. :)
