Hi!
My standardbred loves his evening meal. He's being worked more than before and so we've started to add oil to his feed. However, he doesn't touch his dinner if it has oil in. Is there any other substitute for oil?
Thanks!

what about something like micronised linseed, which is high in oil but has a grainy mealy texture so might mix in with his dinner in a less noticeable way?

One of mine hates oil but happily eats a good mugful of micronized linseed in his feed. Better omega 3 and 6 balance too. If none of your feed suppliers has it you can buy it direct from Charnwood Milling but there is postage to pay naturally.

Could be you added too much oil too fast. Scrub out all his feed bins with very hot water and washing up liquid, make sure all residue of the oil is gone, same with the buckets. Start by adding just one teaspoon and if you can mix this with bran so all you have is an oily crumbly mix, you may have to buy the bran from the supermarket as you won't need 20kgs of it. If he likes peppermints you could add a drop of peppermint oil to the mix. Mix well in to his feed. if he eats it make it two teaspoons the next night, each day its eaten double the amount the next day, by the time you have reached the point of a half cup of oil being eaten you can start mixing it directly into the feed, remember the peppermint oil too.

Oil can go rancid quickly so keep it cool, in a fridge if you can and sniff it yourself to check its still OK.
