I have a rising three year old. He's a really chilled out character in general. I've had him a year and In that time he's been turned out with mares/next to mares and with gelding and currently a colt of the exact same age.

The yard I'm at had originally put him in a paddock next to a mare (not the colt originally- so I know it's not his hormones adding to the problem)
He jumped out (3ft electric off mains) and got in with her. So I put 5ft posts up (but she kept jumping out and getting in with him) so we made them 7ft high!!! But she still jumped out. So we put him in a paddock with the colt and that's fine in the day (it's a stallion paddock with 6 foot fencing)
BUT he's stabled at night next to the mare and In the evening when the mare is being worked etc he flips out and rears up at the walls and has nearly hung himself on his Hay net (thankfully this snapped) and spills his water all over the place. If you take her off the premises (competition or hack) he goes mad but settles down once completely away.

I feel sorry for mare's owner but also it's costing me in mountains of shavings (as bed gets drenched) and I'm worried one day he'll really injure himself.
He has never been interested in other mares. He also never tries to mount her or hound her. In fact he mouthed at her like a foal the first few times. It's bizzare.

Has anyone experienced this? Any advice? Any ideas how to solve it?

My late gelded pony got in with mare in next door field at end of August. Broke through five bar gate!! Mounted her too.

I've had him on Global Herbs RigCalm and it's been a huge huge help, he's much calmer whilst on it and shows no interest in her now.

Plus we've taken extra precautions i.e. reverse hung gate, electric fencing etc.

I did also have him blood tested to check he wasn't a true rig.

I have a gelding here that showed no interest in the pony mare he was out with, other than normal behaviour, so I had no idea that putting him in with a different mare would be an issue, they got on well, he was not being obviously interested in her but after a couple of days I realised he was totally in love with her and separating them was an issue, he started to rear at the stable door every time she moved, he could not stop looking at her and calling to her if she was not in sight so I had to change the fields so he was not with her, he still gives her longing looks but has got over it, he can still see her as she is in a box nearby but everything has returned to normal.

Is there any way you can move yours so he cannot see her at any time? I think it is the only way for him to start to get over her, unless you owned both and wanted them together it is probably the only way round it, with mine moving boxes would have been the next thing if he had continued to behave like he was, mine is older and hopefully wiser so it was easier to get back on track. Otherwise I think he will continue to be much the same, there is probably dome deep rooted memory that makes them attracted to certain other horses, possibly colour related, I have know some get silly about a grey or coloured horse, the one mine loves is the only coloured here and it does seem as if that could be the key.

Unfortunately I have one like this. 11yo in a mixed herd but he is obsessed with one 12.2hh pony mare! The mare doesn't help as she calls to him sometimes. Big strapping independent mannerly hunter turned to a clingy sap by silly pony!

I tried putting him on rigcalm and also on agnus castus (chaste berry!) ... It helped a little. Put the mare on all the supplements as well, and the behaviour stopped very quickly. It resurges when we run out of powder and when the pony won't let anyone catch her e.g. on spring grass.

Have you tried a calmer like http://www.dodsonandhorrell.com/product/perfect-gentleman or ask the vet to check make sure he was gelding fully. I have started my mare on the stroppy mare one
