Help! Gelding won’t leave mare

Hi
My lovely placid Cob has turned into a complete nightmare after being put out with some mares. One is in season. I can’t bring him in or he gets so stressed and sweats up. He squeals and paws the ground. He is completely unrideable.

I’ve watched him in the field and if two of the mares head to the back field to talk to some other horses over the fence he is straight up there chasing them away.
There’s no option to separate him away due to space
What do I do?

You install some manners in your cob, and start bringing him in and away from the mares before he gets completely herd-bound. If you aren't up to riding him then I suggest lunging him and making him pay attention to you rather than obsessing over the mares.

And if necessary, find a new yard.

Honestly the only way is to separate them

Unfortunately, after moving to my new yard I had much the same issue.

The first initial week was difficult to say the least, but you have to persevere. What I found helped was doing a lot of groundwork, re-enforcing that he had to listen to me. I built up to doing this in the field alongside the mares eventually and it did work wonders but it’s doesn’t happen overnight.

Right at the beginning I did use GlobalHerbs Rigcalm to help him adjust - this is no longer needed as he is well adjusted.

Give it time.
