Just had lesson from my instructor and she said I needed to feed my mare a bit more foe energy. Someone said to just add oil to her feed as I dont want her loopy she is on mollie chaff showshine topspec and response slow release cubes. Any ideas please?

Is she on the recommended amount of the feeds ?? If not I would take her up to the amount and see if the energy levels improve. Is it that she needs a bit more spark in her work or she tires easily - if you want to up the spark then the instant energy cubes/mix are really good as well. You won't find yourself all of a sudden sitting on a lunatic but just a horse that will have a bit more spring :)

Mine is on a weight-losing, fibre only diet - so I went the omega oil route for more energy (plus pink powder). I'm not there yet energy wise though - I wish I could chuck her a handful of oats a day but laminitis says no. Other ideas for sparkle without sugar/weight gain are welcome.

Tiger Oats are pretty good and i feed them to laminitics, 50g - 100g a day, not a lot, just enough for a bit of sparkle and energy to do the work i am asking of them. They are made for endurance horses, fed whole not crushed or bruised and have a small amount of vits and mins in them as well, i feed alongside Baileys Lo-Cal and raw Linseed Oil, again safe for potential Lami's

Interesting... Once the spring grass has gotten over its growth spurt I might try her on a small handful of oats. She currently just gets a scoop of hi-fi lite 4 times a day with a good glug of omega oil and pink powder, plus her hay, and 4 hours of muzzle-limited grazing. I really just need a little more oomph to keep her fun in the school.

I also have the problem of keeping the weight off her so trying to get a good balance. I might try a cube or mix just wasnt sure which one and didnt want to give her another type of feed on top of what she gets so what do I leave out the slow release cube and change for a competition or instant energy mix.

You could try Ener-G. We use it on our good do-er cob X and it is fantastic. We tried oats with no affect at all. Can't add oil because he'd get too fat. But the Ener-G is great. You can use it on a maintenance basis every day but we found just using it 2 or 3 days before needing a bit more oomph for a competition worked best - and was cheaper!
