Sorry but its been years and I have forgotten everything!!!!! So daughter is off to her first gymkhana next weekend (on a borrowed pony!!) and she is in the following classes:

Walk and Trot, Mug Race, Ride & Run, Potato Race, Round The World

Understand all but Mug Race and Potato Race. Presume Potato is dropping into a bucket but whats the Mug Race?

Thanks everyone...

Isn't the mug race the one where you have to try to get the upturned mugs onto a series of sticks? that's what it sounds like it should be anyway!

We call it cup race and we play it...

Start with a cone with a bamboo stick with a plastic cup on it and you take the cup off the stick, canter down to the middle cone which has a stick which you put the cup on, race down to the 3rd cone and pick a cup off it and then race back to the start and put the cup on the stick...hope that makes sense?!!?

So all the cups end up on the first bamboo stick then? Am I right with the potato one - ride to the bucket and drop it in? I guess you do a few tatties do you?

Also what should she wear? We are not a pony club member yet as she has only just started and she only has blue joddies. Its our towns local show so suspect it will be quite formal, lots of showing and working hunter classes.

Clannad48 that is so kind and very generous. She is 8 years old, normal size little girl if you know what I mean!! Is she meant to wear a tie? She can borrow her brothers white school shirt!! and I will get her some beige joddies as well.

Its all happened earlier than expected - she only started riding a couple of months back but has come on so well thought she would enjoy the thrill of a gymkhana.

I'm sure they will explain all the rules of each game...might be a good idea if possible to try and get a bit of practice in and make sure the pony doesn't mind flapping flags or poles with cups on!!!!

Check out Ebay for cheap jods, tie etc

I know it's hard as adrenaline takes over but just try and enjoy it, pony games are meant to be a bit of fun and helps to teach kids that it's the taking part that counts...but who am i kidding there will always be a kid that cries!!!

The cup race we play has only 2 cups but 3 poles to switch them to.

Good Luck

If you practice the mug race, don't use bamboo - one snapped years ago and killed my friends horse (it went into its heart..) I use a plastic electric fence post for my son to practice...xx

Thanks everyone - I cant wait to be honest. I have cancelled an event (and its a qualifier) the day before so we can get ready. Think I might be more excited than her!!

We will do some practicing in the field. I am confident the pony will be okay. Last words!!

Thanks everyone, will post some pictures after the event!!!
