hiya everybody not been on here before but seems like some really good advice so please i would love to here everybody opinion on this......

i have found a horse which i am going to view soon from a dealer the dealer has put this gelding up as "safe ride and would suit novice rider or mother daughter team or happy hacker no vices" it is a cheap price and happy for vet check and 3 months warrenty has anyone else had this and been succesful any opinions would be greatly appreciated thanks xxx

Hello and welcome - good luck with your horse buying!

I would ask for people to pm you with experiences of the dealer - from what you describe people have both fab and miserable experiences with the same circumstances - it depends on the dealer.

Is someone (e.g your instructor) going with you?

hiya thanks for replying
no no instructor coming but vet coming and an experianced friend the dealer has a slighty dodgy past happening but that was a good few years ago on what i can find out about him is there any advice you would suggest when we go to see him?

what's his name? We can probably help better if we knew who it was.......

If you're looking at a horse from a dealer, same things apply as if you're buying privately

See the horse in the stable
See the horse trotted up in hand (see his paces and basic soundness)
see the horse ridden on the flat and jumped by someone else
If you still like what you see, then sit on the horse yourself and do as much as you're confident doing - all three paces, jump, in the school, hack down the road, across a field etc etc - depending on your ability, confidence and the horse
If you have a knowledgeable friend or instructor, ask them to sit on as well, if necessary

Vets will advise as to suitability for the job you want the horse for, but not whether the horse will suit you. Get a 5 stage vetting - costly but well worth the risk of buying an unsound horse

You have legal comeback on a dealer that you don't have on a private sale, so have confidence in that but go with your eyes wide open, take everything the dealer says with a pinch of salt as all dealer's horses are perfect unless proven otherwise :P

Seems very cheap, but then you get what you pay for. I have no knowledge of that dealer, tread carefully!!!

Amazing price - seems too good to be true!!

don't know anything about the dealer so can't comment and am not commenting on any individual in the following observations about the horse's advert

Horse looks more TB than ISH - not great conformation, but then for that money, you're not going to get a show horse.

Ad tells you nothing about the horse - history, what competitions/hunting/life experience he has. Says nothing about whether he's good in traffic, to box, shoe, clip, to hack alone and in company, whether he has any stable vices etc etc. Check if he's microchipped and that his passport is issued by a reputable passport agency and is undeniable his.

I would get a full writtten warranty that the horse is good in all the above.

also, he looks a little thin - you might find that once he's put on a bit of weight , that he's not quite so quiet......

Go with your eyes open and trust your instincts :)

Puzzled--why would a poster from Ireland wish to view a cheap Irish horse in Co Durham?
Ireland is full of horses looking for a buyer.

The dealer is well known with TS offences in the past and investigated by a BBC programme--just google

Troll???????????????

Friend of said dealer?????????????

If you are looking for a novice horse I think 7 is still quite young education wise and it has to be an exceptional nature/have had great start in life, to make a perfect first horse.

As above, go in with your eyes open - and the least that can happen is you learn a little bit more about what you are looking for.

Again, for most people with most horses, I would suggest putting aside a 'settling in' budget - by their very nature most horses will through up a few challenges, particularly in the early days.
