Hi there can anyone help me i have a 7 year old 16.2HH TB who has been on box rest for the last 2 months due to tendon Injury, He will be in for a further 4 months, and I really would like some advise on what to feed him.
He is a real hot head very stressy, I have just been given the green light to start walking him in hand for 15 mins a day, I tried this the other day But he was just too fizzy he went stupid rearing up boxing at me bucking just full of beans!! As you would expect from been stuck in for 2 months!! Any thoughts for what to feed him to keep his weight on as he is not a good dooer. ????? or any advise of what i can do to keep him occupied while the poor lad is stuck in???

My mare is on box rest at the moment - I am feeding her spillers fibre cubes (or at least, our feed merchants equivalent). She does ok on them.

If you are leading him out put him in a chifney or a bridle.

Hay hay and more hay

)

if he needs a bit extra, speedibeet adds bulk nicely ;o)

echo the chifney / bridle... leadrope over the nose at the very least!... perhaps ask your vet for some sedalin too..

Yeah i have just been given some sedalin but i don't want to have to give him that everyday for the next 4 months really!! I have had him out in his bridle, and had no control at all....
But thinking would a chifney be a bit better??? never used one..

He is on as much hay as he can eat but he is not too fussed about it just picks!!!

Thanks for all the advice...

I would make sure his diet is entirely fibre based, try him on something like hifi lite to bulk his feed out with anything that won't send him off his rocker.
I second the chifney and sedalin.
How do you feed him? Is it just in a bucket and a net? Sorry silly question but if it is perhaps look into other methods (such as the likit balls) to put his feed in to occupy him. Veg on a rope may help take his mind off being stuck inside as well.

I think i am going to invest in a chifney.. Worth a try

Yeah i feed him his feed in bucket and hay in net!! He has apples in his water and a lick-it too, But would still rather dance round his stable half the day bless him... I will try the veg on a string trick and maybe get one of those feed balls- good thinking.. Thanks for that.

i can highly recommend Coolstance Copra Meal (google it) my lad is fed on it has done him wonders. i was recommended it by a friend who had fed it to her ex racer and it was the only feed that kept the weight on him and didnt send him loopy.

its main ingredient is coconut meal and it contains no added sugars

i love it xxxx

I have been feeding my 7 yr old tb with tendon tear and other issues calm and condition by allen and paige.Hes been a angel on it.New mare tbx who is complete nutter(lol) is on it too its the only feed that she is managable on.She is very anxious and fizzy ridden but is now doing some good work and has really settled everything else blew her brains. Its a sugar beet and linseed feed that you need to soak for 10 mins .

I kept my 3yp fairly opinionated youngster on hifi lite and Baileys lo cal feed balancer.

I would def lead your tb out in a chifeny, it would have been used to that if he had raced. Oh and gloves and a hard hat.

Also, ask your vet about very restricted turn out - as in, in a 20 foot x twenty foot pen. I did this with my youngster in a turn out pen and it worked a treat.

try t/b calmer from global herbs and loads of hay and alfa a lite speedi bbet and high fibre nuts all low in sugar and starches and dkg!

When I had a very firey 17.3hh (and I'm only 5'1"), 3 year old TB filly on 6 months box rest after a hock operation, I ended up long reining her out. Rather than attempting to lead her out in hand, that is. This was after the first few attempts at walking her out in-hand (with a Chifney) and she was still trying to rear and plunge. Failing this, she'd lash out viciously with her front legs or snake round and attack you with her teeth. She was a savage cow, in those early days.

I found long reining her out in a bridle really worked. It kept me out of the way of her front feet, teeth and hind legs - and she soon realised that plunging and pulling got her absolutely nowhere. Within a couple of sessions I was able to long rein her quietly, out of the yard and across fields.

TBH, He probably won't need the sedalin for the whole 4 months... just until the novelty of being out of his box wears off... He sounds like a real stressy sort so I'm not sure any amount of toys etc will do anything for him... just keep his routine regular and feed lots of fibre..
