I need to order semen before 8.30 am today . I have phoned the German number and the answer message is all in German and i dont understand a word of it . What do i do now ? Semen is from St Morritz Jr . I have tried to phone Flax Lion stud ,no answer . Help

At last i have managed to get in touch with Germany ! It would cost over 700 euros to get semen here for tomorrow because it is Saturday ! I am gutted . I am a small time breeder and i can not afford that . How much would the foal have cost me by the time it hits the ground ?. My mare was jabbed last Thursday by a very experienced vet . This could happen again and again . Either way this has been a very expensive mistake and a hard lesson learned . I for one will never use semen from a stallion abroad again . I will leave it too the people who have loads of money . Totally disillusioned ,forced out by the big boys again !

I used Flax Lion stud 2 years ago, using Bon Balou, a stallion also based in Germany at the time, and their service was A*.

I know you must be feeling stressed and gutted at the moment, but you must have known that your mare had to be prepped to be ready for insemination on a week day. I was told that by Cheryl when I had a chat with her prior to sending my nomination (& I believe I read that on their site, though I couldn't swear to it), then my vet told me, for good measure. I am a very small one mare breeder, who breeds the occasional foal, I can't afford the TNT Saturday delivery prices and I made damn sure she would be ready mid-week, easy enough to do with a bit of skillful cycle manipulation.

I think it is a bit unfair to blame "the big boys". All you and your vet need to do is to make sure she is short-cycled to ensure she is ready to ovulate mid-week. Maybe a bit late in the season now, though not overly, if you manage to catch her next time, but well worth it for a foal by the gorgeous St Moritz Jr.

Good luck.

I think using chilled semen from a horse so far away is always going to cause some potential logistical challenges. Is there a particular reason you don't want to use frozen? It could be stored at the vet's or a more local facility and readily available to you

Hi there,

Sorry for your disappointment. Is there any chance you could choose another stallion here that you could get the semen for?

Sometimes it fate!

Good luck

Ditto others - semen deliveries on weekends are expensive in this country farless from overseas and so I am not surprised it is expensive. Have you paid stud fee, etc already as if not then could you not use a UK based stallion?

The problem with needling in a mare and giving her Estrumate or Lutalyse to pinpoint ovulation is that unless that MARE has read the book and knows what she is SUPPOSED to do according to "The Plan", she can shoot through in 2-3 days, be breedable in 5 days like she is supposed to, the follicle can stall or regress, another follicle may come up and become the breedable follicle, nothing at all happens and you need to hot shot her again and/or any combination of the above

As a stallion owner, I get SO many calls from Mare Owners saying "I have needled in my mare today (Friday). Can you please send semen to me on Tuesday?" and I say honestly - get your vet back in on Monday or Tuesday to check her again and then let me know where she is at. In many cases - we are too late - she has already ovulated or is in the process of ovulating and in other cases on Monday/Tuesday she is still in the high 20's or low 30's and the vet comes back on Wednesday/Thursday and/or Friday to check again because she is not progressing as she should

We all do the best we can, vets included, but unless that mare follows the textbook version of how things are SUPPOSED to go, anything can happen and it usually does ...

Lindajones,

700 euros? What, just for shipping? Jesus.

Have you considered Elite Stallions? A professional and first class service, with stored semen, in this country, and from a variety of first class horses.

You could also try The Stallion Company, they ship semen over here from France, 7 days a week. You could also 'phone Tullis Matson at Twemlowes, another excellent service provider. Don't give up!!

Neither company may have semen from the horse which you specifically want but better than not covering perhaps. Just a thought.

Alec.

I have used Flax Lion stud and received an excellent service, the fact that your mare was ready to inseminate over a weekend is nothing but bad luck, you cant really blame the stud.
As others have said, why not use frozen in the future if you are worried about this happening again?

Could you switch to using Don Ricoss? Might he work with your mare? His semen is available frozen in the UK for £350 per dose but the stud may be willing to alter your breeding contract to accommodate you. Most studs are very accommodating and you could collect the semen yourself ready for insemination tomorrow perhaps :)

Sorry you're so disillusioned... but trying to time mares to co-incide with Tuesday-Friday semen deliveries effects all of us big and small.

We tend to use ovuplant the day before semen is needed to try to control ovulation - you can often bring a mare forward so she ovulates a day or 2 earlier than she might have done otherwise. So instead of ovulating on the Sunday outside the semen delivery window, she might ovulate on the Friday when you CAN get semen. I would talk to your vet - if you let him know which days you can get semen, he should be able to time your mare so she's ready.

Sorry to hear about what happened but i feel i have to stick up for flac lion stud.

I usef them 2 years ago and they couldnt have been more helpful. I left my mare at the vets all week and unlucky for me she decided to ovulate on a weekend. I made a call to cheryl and she managed to arrange a saturday delivery for a little extra, no way near £700!

Unfortunately she didnt take and next time around ovulated mid week.
Breeding is all about luck.
