I asked this a few weeks ago and some of you lovely peeps gave me some fab ideas, but i've forgotten them and cannot find my post.

Someone gave me a recipie for fly spray which included citronella, tea and vinegar. I can't for the life of me remember what quantities.

Help!!

this is rema's recipe, it works trust me I used it last year

1.5 litres of strewed tea
large bottle of vinegar (17p at tescos)
10ml bottle of citronella
baby oil (just a small amount)
washing up liquid (small slug)

I use the one with oils, dettol, tea and SkinSoSoft in it and it is fab - Avon on line is buy one get one free - so I have just bought 4 bottles and got 4 free!!!!!!

Ta for that - will go and stock up now - was waiting for this offer.

This is mine and I know others have used it and found it effective.

Good website for ordering oils is:

http://www.essential oils direct

5 caps of dettol - from a 500ml size bottle

250 ml of Avon Skin so Soft and fresh - 500 ml bath oil. This can be halved if midges not too bad. I am presently using one third of a bottle which is working well.

1 teaspoon of citronella oil - can go up to 1 ½ if midges bad.
1 teaspoon of eucalyptus oil
1 teaspoon of lavender oil
1 teaspoon of tea tree oil
1 teaspoon cedarwood oil

Put into a 1 litre spray bottle. Top up to make 1 litre with either water or cold tea. Shake well before spraying and give a quick shake after every few squirts to make sure the oil is mixed with the water.

Spray on twice a day using enough to leave a fine mist on the coat. Ok for round sensitive areas.

I have used this on people as well as horses, but please do a patch test first in case you or your horse reacts to any of the above ingredients.

Cost works out about £3.00 a litre - not as cheap as some receipes but this does work well against flies and midges and smells nice.

Don't - I cannot resist bargains... Last year got their free make up kit.

Their tangle free combs are also really good when used gently on mane, tails and feather - I have 4 - two for show use - white hair and black hair and two for every day use - how sad is that.

Tee hee!!

We don't have a lot of hair, missing 1/3 of a mane at the moment - keep doing the grow dance! and whip any spare hairs off her legs!!!!

I did the oils one, in a cold tea mix with some vinegar, dettol and squirt of wash up liquid and that really works!!

Riding in the outdoor the other night, the midges were really annoying her so much so she was headshaking so I went and put my home made mix on, and she was absolutely fine!!!

Silly question but is it the Skin so Soft Dry Oil Body Spray or the Bath Oil you use?

I think the issue with citronella is that it can cause photosensitivity on skin - horses and people. Thats why its so important to do a patch test and only use it diluted.

When I make up a litre of fly spray I use 5-10ml of citronella, 5 drops each of lavender, tea tree and eucalyptus - I am going to try cedarwood in my next batch.

I use 2-3 tablespoons of white vinegar and use chamomile tea as the base - this helps prevent discpolouration for those of you with white or coloured horses. I also put in a good slug of vegetable oil (I guess thats much the same as baby oil).

Instead of washing up liquid I use a tiny amount of camrosa non alergenic shampoo - my mare has v senstive skin. I find its mild enough for use on me - and I react to everything!

Damm just bought 4 soft and fresh bath oils, another detangling comb and a paddle brush - and all were BOGOFs - also got free beauty bag and delivery and then got on their special site for 30 mins and bought 2 nail varnishes at half price.

I am such a sucker for half price etc bargins.

Anyway boys will be nice and fly free with lovely combed out hair this summer.

You can use the dry oil spray as a top up, but for mixing up in a bottle with other things you really want the 500ml skin so soft and fresh bath oil - must be soft and fresh oil that you use.

We were told that the reason citronella was removed from equine fly spray is because it can, over a period of time, taint the flesh and the French don't like the taste. Am now off to spray every horse in the New Forest so they can't be shipped to France as meat!

Oh don't! You do realise I'm going to HAVE to go onto Avon and get some now don't you

.
OH is now whingeing that the house stinks of citronella. I went and put G's new (home made) fly fringe on and sprayed him with his new fly spray and he stood on his hind legs and screamed at me. I think he likes his deoderant to smell a bit nicer

. At last glance even his field buddies (Ewie and Sooty the sheep) were giving him a wide berth. He's being clipped tomorrow so by the end of this week he'll hate me for sure.
