When I brought my horse in this morning, he had this large lump on his leg. He is not lame and there is no heat.

The lump feels extremely hard, it almost feels like it's part of his bone.

Can anyone help with what it might be?

Looks like either a massive splint, or could he have got a hawthorn or something in there?

A splint came to my mind but they're usually a lot smaller?

Do you think he could have possibly got a thorn deep enough to do this? It's not sore at all, I could poke and prod at it with him completely oblivious (and he's a sensitive boy)

It looks and sounds a bit like a splint to me also, loan horse has one and that's also hard and obv bony.

Would have thought if it was something stuck in there it wouldnt feel bony?

I thought with splints they were usually lame? He's 100% sound. I trotted him up and even rode him to see how he felt, and he felt fine.

Apparently (have just read) that splints can come up as hot or cold? Cold splints don't cause lameness?

I don't know what do to... should i start cold hosing? Does he need to be kept in?

:(

My mare had a splint that size, but she was lame for a few weeks beforehand. Have heard that theyre not always lame with them, but one of that size youd think would be a least slight tenderness if its only just appeared.

our horse was on box rest for 8 weeks first time out she came in with a splint it was not hot and she was not lame

This is what I thought. Hopefully the vet will ring back soon :S
