Help horse has colic

I have just received a call from my YO to tell me my lovely horse is ill with colic. She has given him an injection and he has now passed a no. 2. However this was an hour and half ago and she said she would call me back within the hour to keep me updated. She does not seem worried now he has been to the toilet but I am terrified. It does not help that I am on holiday with my husband and two small children sitting in a hotel room, trying to keep emotions together and feeling helpless. Wish I was there with him to see what is going on and just well to be there really. Has anyone else experience of colic, should he be ok now he has been to the toilet or could it still take a turn for the worse.
 
Honestly he could go either way but I would hope for the better, it's good if he's passing something. She will probably starve him overnight now which is the best thing to do. If you're worried call her back. What did she inject him with?
 
keep an eye on him, but generally as he has been to the loo thats a good sign! Means things seem to be passing through okay. My boy had a near fatal bout of colic and we couldn't take him home after his opp until he went to the loo! (took 3 days!).

Try not to panic too much, I'm sure if he gets any worse she will tell you, you can always call for an update and go up if you are really worried :)
 
its a very good sign he has past droppings but if at all worried i'd be having vet out asap.
but i wouldn't take any chances as i lost a horse to colic (sorry this isn't meant to panic you)

if i were in your position i would call yard owner back and make it clear that you would rather she called vet if she is in any doubt it is more than just trapped wind
 
Not sure of the exact substance, but its something most YOs have to hand over here. Apparently giving this injection at the first signs of colic can stop it. Or your vet can administer it. She phoned to ask if I wanted her to do it straight away or wait for the vet, I got her to do it and then he passed a poo half an hour later. Sick with worry that am not there and he will beon his own during the night. Have asked her to also call the vet, she said she would call teh vet if he went downhill, just feel helpless and not incontrol.

I would be there in a flash if I wasn't on holiday and not able to get there. Just feel sick with worry.
 
My mare had spazmodic colic last year and she passed a dropping just as the vet arrived! As poo was soft he gave her a couple of injections (muscle relaxant and pain killer) and told me to turn her out then check on her in 4 hours to see if the injections were just masking the symptoms. She was ok so called him back and he told me to give her bran and danilion and leave her to recover and she was absolutly fine :)
 
I know that would be my worse nightmare being stuck and not able to get to them. Try not to worry sounds like she's given buscopan (muscle relaxant) which is what your vet would normally do, most are then fine. Can she not do a late night check for you, even if you have to bribe her!?
 
Sounds like your horse will be fine, especially if your YO has not contacted you again.

I always keep Coligone to hand, it is fantastic for colic, Captain is prone to it. His is gaseous and last time he had a bout, we gave him the emergency stuff and half an hour later he was demanding his haylage. Obviously he did not get it but he did pass a pooh in a half hour.

Hope your horse continues to improve, keep us informed won't you? I feel for you as it must be horrible to be far away when he is poorly. *hugs* to you and thank goodness you have a good YO.

Aww thats terrible, i really feel for you. I would be climbing the walls! Sounds like your YO is on the ball and has acted quickly. As he has been able to do the toilet I am sure he will be fine, impaction colic is what i tend to worry about most. TRY not to worry, i know its easier said than done, and ask your YO to give u a call or text late tonight then 1st thing tommorow to let you know how he is. You could always tell the YO that you want a vet to come out and asess the situation, that way you might get peace of mind, best wishes and keep us posted x
 
I lost my wifi connection last night so could not update you till now. My YO phoned again at 10ish having had to give a second injection as he took a if turn for the worse. She said after this injection if no mprovement she will call in the vet. I asked her to call the vet asap but she said to hold on. I didn't hear anything again until 11.30pm when she called to say he was improving. It was a long wait during the night (with no sleep and lots of crying, I was certain of the worst) she called at 9.30 this morning to say he made it. Thank god, honestly I was so worried I would never see him again. Anyway he made it, and this afternoon will be spent sorting out insurance for him, as had not done that yet!!!!
Can not wait to get home and go for a hack!
