The farrier couldnt get out until thursday to sort out my horses loose shoe and the others would be next week. its now suddenly just fell off and is stuck on by 2 solid nails which will not come off at all. hes stabled at night but what should i do??

You need to knock the clenches up with something like a buffer, my hubby has used the edge of a rasp before now, or cut/rasp the clench off, and lever the shoe off. If it's only held on by two nails then it should come off fairly easily.

Lever it gently back and forwards and the clenches should loosen and come out. Be gentle though so you don't damage the hoof.

Ditto. Use something to lift the tips of the clenches. A buffer ideally but anything including the very careful use of a screwdriver will do. Then wiggle the shoe free - gently. You can't leave him with a shoe half off over night.

Get a flat screwdriver and knock where the clenches are bent over up so they are straight, then you can probably wiggle the shoe off, or if still difficult you can try and grab the nail heads with a claw hammer and loosen them. It is quite physically hard, you will wonder how on earth your farrier does it so efficiently!

If you dont want to wiggle a hammer and chisel will knock the clenches holding it on up, he very gentle, or as I have done in an emergency shoe removal plyers do the trick

Phew got it off! It was literally solid dont know how we got it off!! Anyways only problem is the nails stuck in the hoof slightly but its still long as only the heads come off so farrier said itll be ok he'll sort it thursday

So the shoe is off but there is still a nail stuck in his hoof? No way the farrier can get there before Thursday?

If it's still in cos the head's bent over on the outside of the hoof then you can either get some pincers/pliers (most men have various tools you can try!) or even a hacksaw to take the ends off and then, with a pair of pliers or something you should be able to pull the nail out from the bottom

The nails would be there if the shoe was still on, so I wouldn't worry.

The farrier will be able to get the nails out when he comes.

Not sure how you managed to get the shoe off without the nails (only the nail heads?!) unless the nails had snapped. This has happened to me once or twice!

for future reference- you should invest in a pait of hoof cutters- they double as shoe pullers, and if you cannot raise the clenches, then you can use then to snip the chenches off and then pull the shoe. (pull by starting at the heel and pull downwards towards the toe, and repeat on the other branch at the heel, working your way around the shoe to the toe.)

One thing that I'd definitely do is get your farrier to show you how to safely remove a shoe next time he comes for a regular shoeing.

Given the trouble you've had s/he should understand the safety aspect. Might be worth mentioning on Thurs so they can be sure to leave enough time for the next visit.

I rely heavily on skilled YMs for this - but if my share horses hadn't had that I'd definitely be asking for some time with the owner's farrier.
