The horse i have been riding is normally turned out in a headcollar, as he is a bit of a pain to catch. I went up this afternoon and it was off not sure why but found it in the field, there is a horse in field who takes rugs off so thinking he had a hand in it.
Anyway went up to my boy, he was fine had his treats but as soon as i tried to put headcollar back on he span and trotted off. I was on my own with no leadrope just headcollar.
I am going to get my mum to come up tomorrow and try with a rope round his neck first and then put headcollar on. Im thinking of putting his treats so he has to put his nose into head collar then pass it slowly over his head still feeding him?
Do you think this will work? or Any suggestions of how i can get it on?
Thanks:)

While giving him treats just gently but pretty quickly slip the rope over his neck then with your right hand close the two ends together under his neck so youve got him, move him and praise him so he knows you've got him, you should then be able to put the head collar on him.

Good luck xxx

Thanks! Thats a good idea about walking him on with just the rope! He is quite food orientated so hope when he is munching he wont see the headcollar. Do you think its best to have the head piece undone and put on that way or slide it all over his head? I am thinking the first option as he may see the strap going over and panic?

Definately, have the rope and headcollar separate just incase he does try to run, you dont want the headcollar getting round his feet, if you can lure him over to the fence with food and nothing else in your hands so he thinks he is just coming for food and a fuss then have a leadrope and the headcollar in separate bits on the fence, pick up the rope and pop it over, move him a few steps with it, then with your left hand while holding on with your right just pick up the head collar and pop that on too, if he backs away from the headcollar just lower in down so you dont make him back off too much and tug on the rope slightly to remind him you have hold of him!

You'll be fine xxxx

Update!! I caught him very easily, he came up to me had a treat as i put rope round his neck then he stood like a lamb! May have been something to do with the masive rain storm that was happening at the time or maybe he actually loves me?!?
