my pony hates having his ears touched & he has a hogged mane..!!
we kept back his forelock, but just wanted to see if anyone has any tips on how to get near his ears for clipping his mane - he's always been bad, but is getting worse now & sometimes you have to leave clipping the top of it cause he gets so bad!
i don't know why he's so fussy about it - could it be that someone hurt his ear/cut it at his previous home?

help!!

You need a program to desensitise his ears

Trouble is if a horse is a bit touchy you are encouraged to leave them alone with makes everything worse.

Every day you need to handle his ears and poll until his is totally relaxed about it - you can then introduce a little pair of battery hand clippers to get then used to the noise and vibration.

However to be honest, with one of mine I just attack him with a pair of scissors, as I don't have the time to put into his ears right now. Lazy I know!

I just twitch mine for 2 minutes while I do what I have to do. Saves all that fighting, arguing and stress. It is all over so quickly he never even realises he has had the twitch on.

i tried the twitch with him today and it's annpying because he either gets it off or his lips starts going blue & then i take it off!! i can't seem to put it on sensibly without him getting it off

i agree with cotsworld, howver first off, u need to make sure he hasnt got an ear infection/teeth etc which could be causing pain, made worse by the clipper sensation. if not that then,u need to take the clippers out of the equation first and spend loads of time touching his ears - every day would be best and maybe scratch him in his tickly place at the same time as touching his ears so he beggins to enjoy his ears being touched, if he lets you clip the rest of his mane no probs then hes obviuosly not scared of clippers full stop, just nervous of his ears so u just need to get him used to them being touched. dont get the clippers to him till he lets u touch his ears with full confidence.
