help I am new to breeding and need to choose a stallion

I would recommend a visit to Twemlows to see the stallions and meet the Matsons, but I'm not sure I would take my mare there on a 6 hour round trip just to AI?

Stallion AI services will happily ship semen to a more local centre.

To add my tuppence worth into the mix - this year's foal is by Mill Law and she's a lovely girl. Super conformation and bone - definitely looks like she's going to do the job. But most importantly for a small time breeder she's really super easy and nice natured. Her mum is too, but then so is Mill Law, and I definitely didn't want anything that might have added a hot streak. I would love to breed a Badminton winner, but there's a 99% chance that anything I breed will be ridden by an amateur at some point...... so realistically temperament is always top of the list here.

Its a good 3 hours by car so would be even longer with trailer, don't know if stuped question but if i took my mare there could the long drive home effect how she takes? Shes not a stressy traveller but its quite tiring, especially as shes not fit as had last few months off!

It shouldn't do. In the TB Industry, where only live cover is allowed if the progeny is to race, rather than board at the stallion stud (or nearby) for the season, many mares do what is termed 'walking in' and will travel to Newmarket to be covered and then return home from as far a field as Devon and Somerset, West Wales, Lancashire etc. Also, I know of studs that have walked in their mares from the UK to Irish based stallions this season and last.

very usefull info regarding AI and what to think about. I assumed my normal vet would do it as he said he would but have since been told that it would be much better the stud or an AI vet did it, that hadn't even occured to me!

Am going to try and arrange a visit to Tremlows which it seems has most of the horses I am interested in...

Ive just picked my mare up from Twemlows this week after her being there for just over 6 weeks .... is that not an option to leave her there to save bringing her there and back? If you're AI'ing especially using a stallion based there would be a much easier option for you both? Take a nosey at Wolkenderry whilst you're there ... beautiful boy

Thanks, Im really looking forward to getting to tremlows to have a good look. To be honest I hadn't even looked at the dressage horses but im now wondering if that would be a good match as it is her movement that needs the most improving, would i lose some of the jumping talent though?
Looked at Wolkenderry and he looks gorgeous although when it says evented last season, it was only actually 2 events and 1 double clear. I love hannovarians and he would certaintly add quality to her but I really don't want to compromise her jump.
Anyone have suggestions?

I once tried my eclipse to ebony but she didn't take shabb bloodlines tend to have a bit of spark to them, my lad (see my most recent thread) is 3 now and has a wee bit of shabb running through him he's what I'd describe as a loveable rogue I know they do ai too as that's what we used. I would however say that he became fairly well used down here, on the one hand that shows that he was popular and one of the 'choice stallions' in the sw but there were also the comments 'oh not another one by my eclipse' whatever you choose op, good luck with your adventures

I agree with earlier comment about Wish Upon a Star at Grafham, although a KWPN, he is by Gribaldi, not at all heavy, about 16.1 or so and quite compact. I have the most lovely 3 year old filly by him, who is super to look at, moves really well, and is very bold, but most importantly ( for us) has the most amazing friendly laid back ( but not dull) nature. We visited him at the stud and he was the same, a lovely friendly stallion, as well as stunning and obviously talented as I think he is already advanced although still young.
