Dear All
Please help to identify the cause of these very sore open wounds. This is a riding school horse in Morocco. They are very good owners and desperately want to know the cause. The vet here says that it’s something to do with the blood but I doubt this. Apparently it comes every year around the same time. This photo was taken in September at the end of the summer. Could it be flies? Many thanks for your help

The wounds are in a place where commonly African horses are shackled, especially as youngsters. You may be aware that the charity SPANA is active in Morocco, deal regulalry with this sort of thing and are open to helping all owners of working equines. There is a clinic not far from Casablanca or you could send an email.

To me it looks quite like photosynthesis, my mare had that when she came into contact with certain plants etc.

But it could also be caused by a previous injury, using cellulitis lightly but it also can cause issues like this from a previous injury

Do you mean photosensitivity? (Autocorrect maybe)
This was what came to my mind too.
