HELP!!! I'm at my wits end bit/showing people

I have recently put Corroy is a double bridle, at first she went beautifully in it. However the last two comps she has stuck her tongue over the bit and been a moose. I got someone to look at it and we put it up a hole and adjusted the noseband. I hacked her out and she had a fit got her tongue between the two and nearly dumped me on a car

I got off loosend it off and she was a bit happier. I took her in the school when I got back and she tried again but I pushed her forwards and she went nicely.

However I have a show on Saturday and don't want to risk her doing this AGAIN!!! It's a veteran class so do I perservere, try a pelham or just out her in her snaffle.

Do some horses just not have enough room for a double???? I would like to use it for dressage though as the work in between is much better. HELP!!!
 
I know a few horses who will always put their tongue over the bit when they're in a double... For the show on Saturday I'd try a pelham beforehand, but if she feels a bit "iffy" you're much better off to have her in a snaffle for the show...

Can you not use a flash? When I ride Bear in a pelham I usually ride him with roundings, but 1 day I rode with 1 rein as I forgot the other reins and roundings were at home, and the whole ride he was getting his tongue over the bit! It drove me nuts! I got off countless times and even put it up a hole and that didnt work either!

I personally wouldn't put Bear in a double as his mouth isn't very big, I tried a rubber straight bar pelham and it was way too big in his mouth.

just thought i'd point out that the one ive put up is a pelham as my boy definately does not have room for double. Ive put him in a double before for dressage and it had to be sooo thin to fit in his mouth that he hated it. I only ever use double reins i dislike roundings with a passion. If you cant handle double reins then the better option is the split rein which allows a bit more play on the curb as it uses the snaffle ring first.
 
I can use double reins, I do so in the show ring, but for hunting I don't want to be farting about in a gallop down a steep hill trying to gather up two pairs of reins!!!! And Bear doesn't mind either way which is all that matters!
 
A rugby pelham will look like a double. I was worried when someone suggested putting the bridoon higher but leaving the weymouth as a toungue between the bits would be very painful.
Hope it works out but if the tongue is sore I would leave riding in any bit for a few days.Just lunge without a bit .

madam max, my lad has a huge toungue as well as a low pallette so very little room in his mouth at all. He hated a standard mullen mouth pelham. The slight port in the show pelham gives him the extra room without hitting the roof of his mouth which i found was a problem for some of the bigger ports! it is also not too bulky in the mouth as it is not thick!
Ive tried all sorts with my lad to find the bits he is happy with and have an absolutely huge collection of bits, i think we went throuhg about 6 different pelhams before i stumbled accross this one, and i still havent found a snaffle he is completley happy in and that is dressage legal, he loves a cambridge magic bit but it isnt dressage legal he wont tolerate a single jointed bit at all (i end up with abroken nose when i try), wont tolerate hanging cheek or thick mouth pieces or mouth pieces that are too thin, the best we have found so far is the french link snaffle. i have a feeling he would probably be happier in a losenge bit but as i dont have the need for a dressage legal snaffle often and losenge bits are very very expensive i tend to stick with my cambridge magic bit.
 
Thanks. I think I will try both. My girl is very sensitive. She is ridden daily in a KK ultra (losenge bit) and for faster work/jumping a Waterford. I need to find a soloution quickly. DO you know if anywhere ships those bits next day? Thanks again.
 
Conniegirl - Asti is VERY similar to yours. Doesn't like things in the roof of her mouth, terrible with bar pressure off single joints and prefers some tongue relief. Snaffle wise I bought from Rideaway, a loose ring central "revolver" bit (so double joint with effectively a lozenge) and its wasn't silly money.

Her none legal snaffle before that was a myler low ported comfort snaffle, and I got a similar pelham as she just hates ordinary bar bits and even happymouths!

Awkward devil! She is good in a hackamore mind, wish that was dressage legal!
 
I think you may find the problem is there isn't enough room for the tongue and it causes a sort of panic attack reaction.
Borrow a bit with a higher port and try that, or try a Rugby pelham.
The sprenger looks quite a chunky bit, I'd perhaps try something thinner.
 
Are there thinner ones? I bought it as it said it was the thinnest they make and good for introducing a horse to a double

I did try the hackamore option with mine for everyday riding and we had a rather large protest about it! ive never met a horse quite as fussy as him about what goes in his mouth. i wouldnt swap him for the world though. i will look into the revelover bit for mine, but i dont do dressage often. we mainly show.

I dont personaly know anywhere that will ship next day as i picked mine up on a trip to derby house. however google showed these people have a next day delivery and you can return the bit within 14 days! if it doesnt suit
