Help, itchy horse

Hello dizzy. Only just read this and wondering how you are going on with this. I've had a similar problem and had flamazine oint from vet. Was told not to hibiscrub once scabs removed as can be detrimental if used too long. Also keep brushes clean and disinfected and don't brush or rub the coat too hard as it can cause abrasions which the bacteria will get into. I've washed all rugs which will fit in washer and rinsed in dettol laundry cleanser. Not sure what to do with thicker rugs which are being washed commercially though as the bacteria may not be killed. It's not an easy thing to deal with so hope you are making progress.

Thank you for your reply, I will pass this on to my friend.
I don't think she is any better yet but hasn't been on the antibiotic a week yet.
It is horrendous and so awful to see her so uncomfortable.

another update,
mare seems much more comfortable on original worst areas but is now itching on her back and shoulder. Friend has been using Flamazine instead of hibiscrubbing but things are getting worse and bigger so now back to the hibiscrub for a while at least. She is spraying the rugs with antibacterial stuff every other day. Is this nightmare ever going to end?

So sorry to hear this. Your friend is obviously trying to do her best and must feel very disheartened. Trying to think of something which may help but sounds like your friend is doinv all she can.
The bacteria will multply in warm , moist environment and will thrive under scabs so using hibiscrub again to remove them seems the best thing to do.
Is it possible the antibacterial rug spray is causing a reaction? Could try a thin cotton rug under turnout rug which can be washed at home. Watch she doesn't get too warm under rug though.
Taking the hoody of the rug when poss is helpful as the skin can breath through the neck, but I would only do this on dry days. (Not sure if I said before but it is same bacteria as rain scald). What you need is a nice day so she can have the rug off and let the air circulate. Can but hope.
After clipping mine I used a naff skin product and hot towel method to prevent clipper rash. I've never used hot towel before but was really impressed . Removed any remaining loose hair and lots of dirt and grease. I paid 20 quid for the product and now think it is mainly vinegar though!
Only other thing I can think of - does she need more anti biotics.
Sorry if you already know all this. Just trying to think of someway to help.
mine had a second outbreak but was only about a week after the first. X

thank you Lamlyn, it is so disheartening, as she seems to improve then another patch starts up. Had a stable test today though and she wasn't rubbing so maybe she will be able to come in again at some point and out of this dreadful weather. Cotton rug sounds like a very good idea. Antibiotics finish tomorrow so friend is going to ring vet to see if she should continue a bit longer, appreciate you taking the time.
Alyssakay, will have a look, thank you.
