His website appears to be down (or does he have a new one?? I'm trying http://www.pycock.co.uk/ )

I want to e-mail him about a very peculiar problem with a maiden mare which my vet is totally confused by - and a consultant repro vet who saw her saw her when the problem was (temporarily) not there!

If anyone has his current e-mail address, PLEASE message me with it.

Hi

I have an email address but your inbox is full!!!

Whoops - not any more! I can't believe he's retired - hell, he's MUCH younger than me!

And oldywoldy - I'll outline it here as I'd be delighted to hear from anyone else who has come across this problem.

Maiden mare - to be AI'd. She'd been scanned the day before - all looked good and she was choruloned. But, past the hymen (which was tough as an old boot!) there was a stricture in the vagina that literally was impassable - 3 fingers the limit - and we couldn't get to the cervix.

I had a very experienced Repro vet down 3 weeks later to scan some mares while my vet was away so I got him to examine her - she'd just ovulated. Vagina was fine, no sign of the stricture - so lined her up again. AND, hit the same problem - the stricture was back and there was no way of getting to the cervix!

It APPEARS it happens - possibly due to low oestrogen levels - while she is in season. Once she's ovulated, everything back to normal! If anyone can throw any light on cause (and how to deal with it!) I'd be everlastingly grateful!

Janet, I haven't a clue what I'm talking about, so this is just a question; If the entrance way to the cervix is as restricted as you say, but there is some room, then what's to prevent semen being introduced by some sort of pipette? It obviously wouldn't work, or that's what you'd have done, I just don't understand why!

Alec.

Oh we tried, Alec. Problem is, the cervix was pretty tight too and while we could get the catheter past the stricture, steering it through the cervix from a distance proved impossible.

Jonathon Pycock lectured at a course I was on recently.....I think he said he'd not so much retired as changed what he was doing, if I heard right.
He now works as an advisor for insurance companies when people try to sue vets.

We're all going to miss him.

Equine Reproductive Services (UK) Ltd is my reproductive vets and James (Crabtree) has indeed taken over the practice and Jonathan has moved onto other types of work as other posters have indicated. James worked with Jonathan for a number of years and can be reached on equinereproductiveservices@gmail.com if necessary. Good luck trying to sort this one out, sounds very unusual!

Had a prompt reply from James Crabtree (Jonathan is on holidays) but he seemed to think it was related to the hymen - which we're convinced now that it's NOT! Because we examined her again after she'd ovulated this time and the stricture was still there. BUT, it appears to only occur when she's short cycled/Choruloned! We're going to let her un a full cycle, I think - and then try natural cover - although I'm contacting other repro specialists to see if I can find one who has seen this problem!

lol, we tried that - first time it didn't work. We tried it again but won't know for another 9 days if it worked this time. If it didn't, I'll let her come back in naturally and try natural cover - I have a stallion who isn't over-endowed so I don't think either of them would come to harm! My vet spoke to another expert whose best suggestion was that Mark's hands might have been smaller than Bill's - so Mark didn't find it for that reason! Definitely NOT the case!
