My boy has come down with a mild case of lami :( and needs to be on box rest for two weeks.

The problem is we only have two stables which are used for storage tack room etc. I could possibly clear one.

I put him in the field shelter today which was shut by a five bar gate then a couple of metres walkway and another gate. He managed to jump the first gate and bash through the other in the three hours that I went home and got out into the paddock with short grass :/ he has badly grazed his leg in the process which has not helped.

I have had to section a muddy bit of his normal paddock for tonight so he is with all his friends but off the grass. I obviously need to get him on a deep bed and back inside but have no idea what to do.

There is a very large field shelter in another field that I could use which he may feel happier in. I have his Shetland companion arriving on Saturday so can use her if I need to but don't want her shut inside with him for two weeks solid.

Any ideas anyone?!?

Wine for everyone if you get this far

This is the shelter he was in this afternoon if it helps

Extend your gate upwards. Get a tame male to bolt a couple of 25mmx75mms together with the top two rails of the gate between them, then screw or bolt a board along the top. If it looks solid and high enough, most horses won't attempt to jump it. The small section to the right of your gate with the rail is easier to deal with, just screw or nail a couple of uprights, then a board along the top.

See the two left hand gates in the picture which were extended up wards when one of mine attempted to jump out. The first gate just has hay behind it but the intervening gate, between that and the horse part, is also extended upwards.

Quick fix would be to raise the gate. They dont need to be on the floor, you could lift it 18" which would probably put it above the height your pony would jump. Unless of course he is into limbo dancing :D

And agree that just a board should sort the side out.

Thanks for the advice guys! I just spoke to the vet who advised just to let him go on a small area of bare grass with his new shettie friend when she arrives on Saturday! As he is just destroying himself trying to get out and his lami is not too bad esp as he jumped a five bar gate and electric fence this morning! I am going to muzzle him too during the day and give him hay at night.

Oh dear! Why is it never easy!!
