My horse was shod 9 days ago ( by a farrier I have used for 10 years)

He was slightly sore after the farrier visit. Since then he has got worse then better over the last few days we have trialled bute that had little/no effect to lameness. Farrier has been back out removed shoe tested hoof and he was sensitive all over sole ( he is a tb) farrier re put shoe back on re positioning nails.

Original slight heat in effected front hoof but since this has gone slightly warm but barely noticeable. No pulse.

He isn’t as lame on soft ground as on hard appears to be quite footy- tripping over the smallest of things ect, but is sound in walk. Turning seems to be causing him more bother the last 3-4 days. Farrier is in regular contact and I have been sending daily vids to him of lameness.

My question is shall I get the vet up to xray ect he is 24 years old and in regular( easy) work your standard happy hacker who dosnt get galloped around.

We really want to get to the bottom of this, any ideas what this could be ?

He had nail bind about 15 years ago he was lame instantly and once shoe removed and put back on this lameness resolved itself ( it was that long ago I can’t remember a great deal as it was over and done so quickly and I was 14 at the time!)

The struggling with turning would concern me as that can often be associated with laminitis, also if the horse has low grade laminitis going on sometimes being shod can cause it to get into the acute stage.

So I would get him off grass and on a deep bed just incase and I think I would get the vet out just for peace of mind.

Abscess was my first thought too. I had one who got hopping lame on a turn on concrete but otherwise looked fine on a surface or in a straight line and it turned out to be an abscess that the farrier and vet missed which burst out through the coronet band. The weather and ground at the moment would be perfect for an abscess too.

Mine was recently on and off lame, hopping on a turn. Had to x ray it to find out a cause and luckily was only an abscess, it was quite deep and on the side of the foot so was causing alot of pain when turning

Ours do not get turnout in winter ( they get access to hard standing) laminitis crossed my mind( he has a deep bed and access to his stable all day

I had a lameness specialist come up and he didn’t seem to concerned (this wasn’t my usual vet) but I may have my usual vet up to x ray

Yes I thought this- we don’t get turnout as such in winter we get hard standing so he hasn’t really been in much mud apart from when he goes for his 2 walks / usually he is ridden but this has stopped that

This is my worry- think I will ring vet today and book him in for an xray
If it is that, that could be the best thing at least nothing will be broken. My farrier just spotted an abnormal bit and scraped it away and it released, after that no more lameness once the pressure released. Although i did do two lots of poulticing , took a month in total to get a pad and shoe back on. Crossing everything for you
