I have an old pony losing condition. I want to get some condition back on him before winter. The problem is that he shares a field with a laminitic, therefore we restrict their grazing. He used to be a good doer, but as he's aged he drops condition quicker. They both share last year's hay fed soaked and ad-lib. He has a scoop of Safe and Sound twice a day. His companion has a quarter Stubbs scoop of Pure Feeds Light. My worry is that if I change them both over to this year's good hay, the laminitic may pile on weight again. Is there something I can mix with my oldie's feed? I've been thinking maybe sugar beet or Fast Fibre.
Sorry if this is too long.

Can you muzzle the laminitic instead? Or bring it in so the oldie can have free access to some grass for a bit? Adjacent fields?

I would start with that first personally.
Sugar beet has a much higher DE than fast fibre (which is more for good doers) so I would opt for that over the fast fibre or possibly copra coolstance which is higher again but all oil based. I'd also add some micronised linseed for him.

I have muzzled my native for the first time this year with 2 different brands and have been really pleased with the results and it meant he could stay out with his TB pal.

Thanks for this. I will ask my field companion's owner if she will muzzle her laminitic. I think that's a very good idea, thanks. I was reading about copra cool stance only last night when I was reading up on what to give my oldie. Will make enquiries for stockists.
