So I have seen a Leyland Daff FA 45 N reg that ticks all my boxes. It would be nice if it was a bit newer but much newer than my D Reg. So if you have/had/worked with one do they have any specific problems, are they pretty good Boxes? Anything specific I should look for at a viewing?

Thanks in advance!

As with all older trucks you need to make sure that you can still get parts for them and that you have a mechanic that can service 'old technology'. You may already have a good horse box mechanic but if you don't have chat with local horsebox owners and ask them which mechanics they use and have a chat with them about the availability of parts for them.

Daf engines are very good as Peter says check you can get parts.

The DAF part is the ENGINE/Chassis nothing to do with the box on top.

Had a daf many many years ago-was brilliant never let me down ever. Had an oakley body on.

I have a K reg DAF - no problem getting parts so far, she's serviced at a main dealer as they can do her overnight and have never expressed any worries about getting parts at all.

were reccomended to us as better older lorrys than fords (cargos and other similar)

we were also encouraged to go for coachbuilt (even if a bit older).

check theres easy access to the engine (tilt cab or hatch in the living)

posibly the best make of chassis if your on a tight budget they made them up to 10 years age so parts are easly found new or used, if its in good condition you will be fine make sure it isnt too heavy and the cab tilts... non tilt= big repair and service bills...

I was always a cargo person, but started having problems with parts. My local commercial breakers yard who I've known for ever, said the best lorry was a Daf. Easy to work on, easy to get parts and at a reasonable price. I've now got one, an "M" reg, and am very happy with it. Drives like a car with an incredible turning circle. Supposed to be very economical as well.

IMO Good!! I have an H reg Roadrunner, Apart from one light bulb I've not spent anything on it in three years, ( plating, insurance and tax excluded) drives like a dream, starts first time, never let me down, and yes it has an amazing turning circle!

TBH I'm dreading it when it eventually packs up!

Just bought a layland Daf 45 myself on a P reg. Its fantastic to drive like a car - I am only 5'2" and I manage it no problems and feel very confident!

I have a very good friend who is a HGV engineer (does all our lorry work) and he says buy a Iveco, Leyland or Mercedes. Stay clear of Renaults, Ford Cargos and Bedfords as parts are horrendous to get. He had a renault 7.5 tonner in the other week for mending and he bought the last spring (which one I have no idea) in the country!!! Oooooopppppsssssss

Good luck with it and let us all know what you decide!

I have a 1998 Leyland Daf 45/150 (means it has a 150 bhp engine) - they come in 110 (rare) 120 and 130 (most common) engine sizes - there are higher bhps, but they tend to be HGVs.

Mine is seriously quick (for a lorry lol!), amazing turning circle (better than my mother's Audi!) and is very reliable.

They were built with 2 engines over their manufacturing lifetime and the cummins engine is the better of the two - lasts forever.

Parts are easily got, it drives really well and the horses travel very well in it - it seems very stable.

I've driven MANs (which wallow on corners and are slow), Cargos and a Bedford TL (no power steering :O ) - must say my DAF is the best!

I had a Leyland Roadrunner before, and it was also great (just older being an E reg)

We had a G reg roadrunner, and more recently a V reg coachbuilt daf 130. She has a fab mechanic who rates the Dafs very highly. It's coming up for sale mid March when my mum comes back from her holidays as she's 65, and not using it very much. It was built 3 years ago - she bought it new, but it only went out about 12 times last year, she's getting a Bockmann Top Master trailer instead. PM me if you want any info :-)

Thanks for the info guys, I feel much more confident about it now! Yes it was just for info on the chasis, i just refere to it as box, my bad.

millimoo its probably going to be way way out of my price range of max 8000 PM me if not.

I have always found Iveco to be the best for chassis, the later models share the same engine as the daf, the iveco is more reliable and the parts are cheaper and easier to get hold of. I use meridian motors in kent for my chassis never had a problem
