Emma my little friesian is a bit of a handful to lead. She doesn't respect my space, pushes into me when she sees something she doesn't like so I have been getting her to step back if she gets in my personal space . She is difficult to steer and move about without getting on top of me and my space.
Was just looking for some advice to teach her the whole leading thing!

What are you leading her in? If you are using a headcollar I would suggest a halter, either a cheap traditional one or a more expensive NH-type one. Both are much better at reminding horses how to behave. I would also carry a schooling whip, not to beat her with but to hold in front to guide her head, or to tap her chest to remind her to stop barging.

Rosie did this too. You'd think a simple thing like leading would be easy but no.

I used to just hold her very short but when she got too much in my face/too strong or started acting up I would just lean my elbow into her neck to try to get her to keep her distance without losing the control over her head. She used to take a wee strop sometimes so I lead her with a lunge line so I could get out of the way when necessary and then just reel her back in

Good luck x

lead her with a smile in the rope, hope you know what that means lol, I would carry on with the backing up as you are doing they soon get the idea. I would use a lunge line till you get to know her, mine pulled me over face first (it was november and muddy) having a strop not long after I got him.
one of my little boys are quite strong, and at just under one i dont want to start using a dually just yet, I want the respect which at the mo is working.

oh and can we see photos of her please

good luck

Checkout Richard Maxwells videos on his website/horsehero; they are very, very helpful.

I use an MR headcollar. My horse behaves differently ie better, when it's on. Spends all his time eating when he has an ordinary one on :D
