Help needed O excellent people of HHO....

My new connie and my hubby's ID mare are turned out together, and since she was last in season about 10 days ago he is totally smitten, to the point that he licks her bum and she lets him.

This has escalated to the point where he has licked a 1" raw patch on each side of her hip.

I've tried to cover this with hypocare, with nappy cream, and with botanica spray, but patches don't improve so I assume he is still doing it.. Last resort was a very strong smelling and sticky (wintergreen and fir extract) orange Norbrook labs wound cream, but its STILL disappearing :(

Is there anything I can put on these raw patches to deter the wee skitter ....

Suggestions however silly of nasty tasting ungents would be VERY gratefully appreciated..

I will try to add a picture of the amorous pair :(

You could try something aloe vera based? It's good for treating minor burns so should help the raw spots, and it's very bitter! Hopefully it would put your boy off. Good luck - it sounds like a very irritating problem and it would be a shame if you had to split them up.

Thanks folks :)

I have aloe Vera and I have a pet biting spray so I will check it can be used on wounds and give it a go :)

It is indeed a very irritating problem :( not helped by the fact hubby and I have been at pc camp all week and the greys have been semi feral in the field :(

Could you put a fly rug on mare and sudocreme or something on the wound? Or even one of the adhesive dressings that only stick to hair under the fly rug for a short while until the wound heals?

Nettex stop itch salve - I use it on the dogs itchy bits and even he won't lick it off!

Thanks :) I'll look out for that one, and also some of the pet deterring spray... the one we have isn't to be used actually on the animal.

In saying that, it does seem to be healing up a bit. Maybe now she isn't in season he isn't as keen ....

I was suggested mustard when I had a field mate eating my rugs, although ended up switching fields so never tried it myself.

On the same train of thought, how about the crib biting solutions? I wouldn't imagine they would harm her skin.
