hi im moving back to london in three weeks (dalston, hackney to be exact) and want a laid back DIY/assisted DIY livery yard within a 30 min drive. all year turnout is essential as is an all weather manege. would appreciate indoor and any other facilities. am waiting to hear back from a few places about vacanies such as lee valley, mote farm etc. does anyone have any suggestions?

Lee Valley is a lovely yard (I play horseball there) but they don't do DIY or part livery -- I think it's full livery only. They definitely have space for full livery though (I know one stable that got vacated yesterday), and are keen to get more in - PM me if you want contact details of who to talk to. Would be SO convenient for you in hackney!

yes iv emailed harolds park - waiting for them to get back to me, do you know much about what its like? any info gratefully received!

Call George, lovely chap but does not really do IT/emails. I was there for several years but moved as in winter they do close the fields and I had an old horse that could not do the horsewalker and needed more turnout.

They hold a fair few competitions over the year.

Good yard, good hacking, very busy and good faciliites, worth a visit. Used to take me about 30 - 40 mins to drive to from Wanstead depending on traffic and time of day.

I think George has opened more fields but still think he does close them for about 8 - 10 weeks sometimes when very wet. If you have a horse that can cope with this (he does have sand turnout pens) then it is a good yard to look at.

Heidi and Ann run the livery service - can have part, full or assisted.

thanks for that but turnout is probs my number one prioirty as my horse is usually out 7am -7pm and loves it! would feel mean keeping her in! any other suggestions?

Harolds Park is full at the moment and he has a waiting list.

Fields are closed for approx. 6-8 weeks - normally shut from 1st week in Jan.

And Anne is long gone from the livery service.

I moved yards recently and did some research on yards north of London.
How about round Theobalds Parks Cheshunt or Crews Hill? Is that too far out for you. There are quite a few yards round there.
It would certainly be closer for you than Mote End which is much further west.

thanks, have just google mapped them from where il be living and mote end is a wee bit closer and generally easier as il be able to drive there in the morning feed & TO then jump the train straight to work then back again to ride in the eve and they have a DIY stable waiting for me ...yay! so thanks evryone thats been sending me details of places to go look at. i appreciate it so much!! hopefully my beautiful horsie and I will love it there...the XC course looks great and they have TO 365 a year which is sooo important.

thanks again!

Some friends of mine are there and love it.

One word of warning though - one of them tried to do what you want to do and leave the car there in the day and they charge £3.50 a day to leave your car.

Yes my friends are really careful to be totally DIY and not use services helping each other out as much as possible otherwise it does get expensive.

The other thing to note is there is a sharer's fee (£4 every time someone else rides your horse) but you can put a second person in the contract and get round it that way.

thanks for the info. i was planning on leaving my car at somewhere by mill hill east station not at the yard but heads up for the warning on car charging fees! it does look like they charge for anything and everything there so i will be sooo careful. good to know that all the DIYers muck in and help each other out! il need someone to share mil 2 days a week and occasional weekends so thats such good info about the contract as i read about the £4 per day for sharers and thought it was mad. especially as my insurance covers anyone handling my horse.

thanks so much for all the info...keep it coming guys! xx

Did they tell you it was for insurance, they told one friend it was to stop people giving lessons on their horses and another that it was because the other liveries complained about sharers.

I used to livery in the area (tho not at Mote End) before I moved my horse out of London.
Mill Hill station I think charge for the car park but you can leave your car on the Brittacy Hill.
Also depending on where you work the overground at Mill Hill Broadway could be quicker. Goes to Kings x then on to Farrington/City/Blackfriars. The spur of the northern line that goes to Mill Hill can be a bit frustrating as they run a shuttle between that and Finchley Central.

thanks for that! they didnt say it was for insurance they say "health & safety" which i interpret as insurance. does anyone know what strangeways is like. it looks nice!

Went to visit Strangeways and it did seem nice - they had really good facilities.
It's a big riding school as well but they had 2 schools for livery only.
I have to have part livery with work so the services were a bit expensive for me and I wanted a slightly quieter yard which is why I didn't go for it (where I am now only has 19 boxes) but Strangeways had lots going for it.

You may also want to look at London Equestrian Centre in Mill Hill.
