I'm looking for a new yard in/near Newcastle upon Tyne and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions?

I'd consider any yard within about 30 minutes of Newcastle centre and I'd prefer a yard that did diy or grass. Must have an arena though due to having a youngster :)

I know a lot of the yards near Newcastle get a bit of a bad press but I'm getting desperate in finding one and have no idea where to start!

Thanks :)

Some DIY yards I can think of within around 20 min drive of Newcastle upon Tyne are Heddon Stables (close to Throckley), Hack Hall and Moorey Spot in Dinnington, The Granary in Prestwick, Whitehouse Farm in Stannington, North Acomb Farm, Bywell and The Gubeon in Morpeth (this yard would be further to travel). All stated have arenas and good facilities but really depends what you want. You will hear bad and good stories about them all so probs best to go and have a look and see what you think. Also some have websites eg The Granary, Hack Hall etc so will give you a feel for the yard. There are smaller yards out there which you may prefer but probs best to ask your farrier or local tack shops for info. Probs best to make a list of what you want from yard before you start viewing!:)

Thanks, I've had a look at a few of them and they seem ok

Does anyone have any personal opinions on them as I don't want to end up at the wrong yard (feel free to PM me if you do)!

Has anyone heard about Scaffold Hill yard and if so a contact number?

I have personal experience of Hack hall and I would strongly advise you not to go to that yard. The grazing is extremely poor my horse hated it there. The owner is not horsey and his reply to anybody with a problem with their horse is 'Get it put to sleep' You must buy all your feed from him and anyone caught buying it elsewhere is told to get off the yard! I'm only telling people of this so they don't have to go through what I did and I'm only one of many who have left for the very same reasons. The yard does have lovely stables and two lovely schools but you can find those facilities at other yards. Its a very clicky yard too, which is something I cant personally stand. I hope you find a great yard anyway! :)

I looked at whittonstall hall livery in the past and for me it wouldnt work.
Having 2 of different sizes meant they would be put in different areas even tho one has to be able to see the other. You arent allowed to turn out or bring in in the dark ( not helpfull for people who work ) and they wont let you use hay or straw, mine couldnt have haylage and having a chronic box walker and weaver was not practical on shavings. Also the fencing was 2 strands of electric which my little one would have got straight through by jumping the bottom strand and under the top one.
At almost 40 a week diy it would have been astronomical when they add the extra charges on for turn out/ bring in everyday then their bedding etc on top. Neither of mine got ridden either as 1 a companion the other in foal.

Have a look at East Moorhouse - their website isn't up to date (there isn't any of the racehorse stuff).

It takes me 40 mins from the Quayside in rush hour - so doable in less than 30 mins not in rush hour.

I love it there and my horses are happy and healthy any questions just let me know!

You can use Hay as long as you soak it, there are smaller paddocks where you could out your two together and yes we do have stipulated bring in/turn out times in the winter but of you want to do your own thing then so be it. I personally hate turning out in the dark as we are at the minute after riding.

What works for some doesn't work for others :)

Recommend the granary stables small friendly livery yard with out door school and 5* stables. On the other hand would never step foot in Prestwick mill farm again been to both yards and Prestwick need to be shut down! Very bad management the liveries think they run the place. Yard owner won't do anything about trouble and is filled with people you really wouldn't want near your horse.

I looked at this yard and was very impressed at the lengths they would go to to help, they have small herds of one sex, but as mine were mixed sexes, I was offered my own field, especially as my gelding can be a bully in the field, they have safety gates on fields, so horses can't damage themselves on them, the one thing I didn't care for, was you had to buy their bedding and hay, I'm not sure if you had to use their farrier, but it came across as a well run yard with the option of a social life as well, I didn't go for it as it was too expensive for four, but if I only had one or two, I'd be there like a shot
If anyone suggest South Farm at Throckley, avoid it like the plague, YO makes up the rules as he goes along

I think Scafold Hill closed down last year as the Duke is applying for planning permission to build houses on it. Rising Sun Farm and Ords at Holystone are near it, may be worth trying them.

In the winter it can be expensive and time consuming, now on full livery elsewhere which is more cost effective esp with 2 when you work. They also have issues with grazing now it seems (or did over winter), there is a lot of social life there yes :)

Scaffold hill hasnt closed down mine are there its a nice yard and has good direct access into the rising sun country park :) they do both diy and grass although i dont know if theres any space at the min as it generally stays pretty full all year round but it might be worth getting in touch with him

my son in law purchased pony from this stable, very naïve - day of transport to Scotland passport lost was promised send on - this hasn't happened 5 months down line have emailed messaged - no passport a registered company should have proof of postage - disgusting getting away with this

This thread is from 2014, so is very out of date.
