Just had a call to say Murphy has lost a shoe (for the first time ever!)

Impeccable timing, as we were supposed to be going to the gallops tomorrow and I was really looking forward to riding tonight as well.

I'm guessing I can't ride him with only one shoe (he only ever has fronts on), and that a trip to the gallops is out of the question?!

We both really need a good blast

I started using Old Macs as my horse kept pulling of his fronts. Probably too late for you now, but measure his feet and keep a look out (ebay!) for some secondhand ones, they always come in usefull.

Have to say, I wouldn't ride a horse that had pulled off a shoe unless I had a hoof boot to put on - Murph will probably become very footsore, possibly before you even get on him!

I would try and get the farrier out to remove the other show quickly ( or get someone on your yard to if you know how) then take him barefoot till you can the farrier out. I always used to still ride if i was in a school but wouldnt jump or go on a hack with only one shoe, your just asking for trouble really

Depending on how good his feet are, you can probably school him on a surface. I've done that before as long as they're sound and the shoe came off cleanly and the feet are in good condition.

Probably best not to take him out though. Best be on the safe side.

Thanks folks, had just decided not to ride and cancel gallop plans, but just had a text from my fantastic farrier to say he'll be over at 5pm. I officially love him.

depends on his feet really. Ron has had nearly 3 weeks with a front shoe missing and he's fine, but if Tom lost shoe he's crippled in about 2 mins.

I would be happy working on a surface, but not jumping and not going hacking, and in any case only so long as the horse is happy and not sore.

I use to just pull the other shoe off, tidy up the feet and continue barefoot until the wear meant a new set were required.

Now they're all barefoot and I can't even remember what 'loosing a shoe' felt like!
