My dad lives in rural area and has got a subaru forester too. He really rates it and does a lot of mileage on top. He has no trouble getting on and off our drive which you need clearance for as it has a huge lip at the bottom. Loads of boot space as well.

You might be better looking at the smaller cars that have optional 4wd. For example the Mitsubishi ASX, Suzuki SX4 S Cross or the Mazda CX5 (they came out about 2011 so you may find one around your budget). I am after a Suzuki but as they only came out last year they're not quite cheap enough yet!
I have a Fiat Sedici which is a Suzuki SX4 with a Fiat badge. It's 2WD but you can put it in 4WD if needed and I have to say it's been fab when I have needed to use it in tricky conditions! The new version though (diesel) is much more economical and I think the tax is about £30 a year.
Peugeot do the 2008 which isn't 4wd but it has some 'intelligent drive system'. Looks nice and very economical plus some models are free tax!

Have you tried Mud Rails? My OH has fitted them to ours and they allow you to push the seat further back to give about an extra 4" of legroom. You might get even more in a 110 as the seat will only go sor far in the 90 due to the bulkhead which you won't have in a 110. They do take an inch of head room though as they sit on top of the seat rails. My OH is 6'1" and they make a big difference to him.

Thanks Annaagain - my brother had those fitted in his 90 and they worked well. I haven't bothered as OH has a Discovery so if he wants to drive, we go in that! Means I always get to drive my car :)
