My just turned six year old NF x cob is going well schooling in her happy mouth bit. It's a simple loose ring Happy Mouth with peanut. However it is very slightly on the small side and has a couple of bite marks on it so I'm going to get a bigger one. I was pretty set on getting a full cheek one with peanut as she has started being a bit nappy on occasion out hacking so I thought that the full cheek might help a bit, but now I'm not sure as I've now seen the Happy mouth contour bits.

So do I stick with what I have now, just in a bigger size, like this?

Go for a full cheek one like this?

Or try the new contour one like this? Do you think the contour ones are more comfortable for the horse or is it just a sales pitch? One of the things which puts me off is that it is an eggbutt, not loose ring.

Opinions much appreciated, thanks!

Which shape is best depends on your mares mouth. some suit one, some the other.
I like full cheek bits as they don't have any effect unless needed.

If she has marked the Happy Mouth bit by chewing on it, I wouldn't be getting another - it should be so small that it causes her to chomp down on it so hard, if it were to make her sore anywhere it would be the lips, one would think, if it is just a bit shorter than you would like.

As for the shape, you need to take the shape of the mouth into account -perhaps ask your dentist (well, the horse's dentist) for advice.

ETA the bit could be causing the nappiness because it is making her uncomfortable

Thanks - no it's not this pony which has chomped down on it. It's a previous one - I bought it second hand from ebay and the seller wasn't particularly honest with their description of it. She seems happiest in the happy mouth - she was previously in a normal stainless steel one and I could never get her to settle. She is going beautifully in the school - just a couple of small issues out hacking. I think she is going through a late toddler phase as we've never been through those - she's been perfect in every way up to now :)

Both my boys are in Myler Comfort snaffles. My Arab is in the level 1 and my Andie has the low ported version. They are lovely bits which are "mouth shaped" and they have independent side action. I love them and wouldn't use anything else.
