Heres the situation. I have four horses - well 2 horses and 2 ponies and rent a small yard. The yard has two larger stables - one about 15 x 11 and the other 11 x 11 and two small stables (which have a sloping roof) of about 9x9. The property isn't very sheltered and in the winter it can be very bleak and the weather rough. Obviously the two horses need the bigger stables at night but do you think it would be unfair of me to put the 2 ponies in the smaller stables when the weather is going to be bad overnight as they are both clipped. Both ponies are just over 13.2 - one is stocky and one is fine. They are able to turn round in the stables but I was worrying about the sloping roof and that they may get cast. If I don't decide to use them as occassional stables i could use them for rug drying/storage etc. Both ponies are used to being in at night.

Depends how low the roof is I'd have thought. Is there any chance the ponies could whack their heads if startled? Otherwise I don't see a problem.

Thats the problem - they definately could wack themselves. I would buy a field shelter or two mobile stables but you need planning permission for one round here

Oh I see. I would worry about that then tbh. The one thing horses do when startled is throw their heads up.
I'd rather have a slightly chilly pony than one with a sore head.
Can you perhaps sort out a windbreak for them such as 4 of the huge straw bales (half ton?) on their sides in a cross - if that makes sense.

Thats a good idea but the largest bale of anything you can buy over here is a large round!!! Hopefully I won't have this problem in the next couple of years as yard owner is knocking the house down and wants to relocate the stables - he was talking about a nice new set of wooden stables further down the property out the way of the prevailing wind

I may ask him if he could apply for a field shelter for me although I doubt I would get permission as the field is classed as outstanding natural beauty - i giggled when i heard that coz I know my horses are beautiful!!!
