I'm trying to find a saddle for my 14hh New Forest x cob. She is stocky and round in build, hardly any withers and a flat back - but no fat pads or anything like that - stocky but not obese. She has quite a long back and is currently in an Ideal 16.5 wide WH saddle. The problem with the Ideal one, is that it appears to have been made for a toddler to ride in - the panels just aren't covering enough of her back surface and it is marginally a little too narrow for her. It was fab for starting her, but she's now had some time off and I want to start a bit of work with her as she turned 4 last month. I've tried loads from the saddlers and she will take a 17" quite easily, but I need something with flat panels for her back - similar to the one I have now. I've found these two on ebay which I'm thinking of bidding for, but not sure which to go for. Does anyone have any experience of either of these saddles and which would be better for a native? I like the flat panels of the Jeffries, but the Native Pony one sounds good as was also used on a New Forest.

One is wide & one is medium.... they have very different seat / flap proportions so can't say.

Thanks. Both adverts say wide - which one do you consider to be the medium one?

Which one is likely to be more like the Ideal WH that I have now?

Forgot to add that a friend currently has the exact same Jeffries one on her little cob in a 16.5" which I measured this morning and is 9.5" from D to D and sits nicely on my pony, but I would prefer a little wider at the front. That's the temptation with the Jeffries one.

TBH if you have to ask when measurements are listed don't buy a saddle without seeing it.
You say your mare can take a 17" saddle but that is seat measuremnet and some saddles can be an inch or more longer on the horses back.

Yes that's why I want some opinions, as I said, from people who may have had either of these saddles on similar type horses/ponies and which they found better for native types. I'm fully aware that the 17" is the seat measurement and that different makes are different fittings.

They're both sold now, and I'm late to this, but that NP Glen will only fit a minority of NFs. The more commone tree we fit to them is the "sport pony tree" which you'd find in Fen SH saddles and some M&M straight cut GPs. If you find something you think might work feel free to pm me the link and ideally an ID number and I can look it up for you.
