Ok, Frankie and Afro used to be turned out in the only field at my yard that has proper fencing all the way round, all the rest have at least one side that is just permanent eletric fencing. It was just them in the field, and it was all working fine. Then the owner wanted to move their herd into the field my two were in, as it is the largest and the herd had run out of grass in the field they were in. Mine did move into another field, but within two days broke out, taking two other horses in the next field with them. One of mine just seems immune to electric fencing, and will not stay put. So I have moved my two back into their original field, along with the herd. This makes life a little bit harder for me, as its harder to get both out without letting any others out (I am managing so far!), and now my two won't come when I call them, and are always at the top of the field (this field is on a very steep hill, after a steep driveway - so it keeps me fit) and I have to catch them in the dark after work, so I have to find them in the dark in this large field. Now all this I can deal with. However, I have ongoing issues with keeping weight on my TB, and now I can't supplement him with hay as that would mean I would have to put enough hay out for all of them, and that means for loads that aren't mine! Also, whenever I go to catch him, he doesnt always appear to be eating, and the grass is going quick due to the herd moving in. So, I could start bringing him in at night, so he gets constant food. But I feel mean bringing him in because I'd rather he was out. However, he also tends to suffer from mud fever so it might help if he does come in at night. So there we are, my dilemna - what do I do?!
