After years of buying rugs that seem to fall apart or leak etc I've decided to bite the bullet and spend a bit extra this year and hopefully get something that does the job properly. After all the rain last year I can't stand it any longer!!
Horses do next to nothing work wise so not clipped but I'm tempted to clip in order to rug (if that makes sense) as last year they were just miserable with all the rain. They are a 15.1 cob and a 16.1 Connemara x Cob. They live out 24/7 with a field shelter that they never use 🙄🙄
I'm looking ideally at detachable neck rugs, 1200D and 50g. Around £100 each.
I like the look and design of the MudRugs, esp as they do the 20g and have also been recommended Swish.
Any experience with these or any other suggestions please??? Many thanks in advance :)

I cannot fault the Storm X one I got last year, its brilliant, comes in all different weights. It was reduced from £120 to £60. Detachable neck, brilliant clips etc.

The other storm X is is a full neck 100 and is brilliant.

All the storm X have been brilliant but the Gallop leaked.

I wasn’t overly impressed with my swish rug. I don’t think I’d buy another at that price.

If you can find a HW rhino for around £100 (probably be slightly over) it would be worth it. My horses (who showed a preference) seemed to prefer their horseware rugs.

I have a LeMieux Kudos 0g that was £105 that is brilliant and has kept Dex bone dry. I also love the way it's cut around the neck and legs so I then also bought the same rug but in 100g for £146 and thoroughly recommend them both.

I also did a real splurge on an Amigo Bravo Reflectech 300g and that has also stood up to wear, stayed warm, super dry, it's cut lovely and doesn't get too heavy. That was £205 though. All three have detachable necks. I splurged on 3 good quality rugs rather than have a few more options of the cheaper ones - that being said I do have a spare cheapo 0g, just in case.

With being on livery yards and seeing an abundance of poor quality "cheap" budget rugs, the old saying of "buy cheap, buy twice" is very true. I would never put them on my horses, I'd rather leave them unrugged than having to endure an uncomfortable badly fitting rug. I only buy Horseware rugs, they are fantastic quality and have lasted years, they are well worth the investment.

I only really buy second hand as I have growing/playful youngsters. But I really rate the Rambo I got last year and a horseware ireland rug my old boy came with outlasted him.

My old livery had premier equine rugs with the liners which she really likes. I found them very heavy, but they didn't move and he was always cosy underneath.

Keep an eye on Hope Valley Saddlery’s site. They have Horseware on sale and do occasionally add new lines to it at good prices.

I have a few Swish rugs I really quite like, ones ancient but still going strong.
I also have a shires highlander plus, the maroon 1200d one which I’m really pleased with. I’d like to buy Alfie one and had a look around recently, they are about £89 for a 100g combo.

For cheap rugs I find both Swish and the Gallop Trojan (1200d) good value and they all fit my variety of horses well.

If you want to splurge you can't beat Bucas or Rambo Horseware. I have quite a few of both with the oldest being over 30 years old and still going strong.

Blue was out in her Big Horse Shop when it was bucketing down all night and came in bone dry. I've had it three years and good as new.

I've also got a Maxima that I've had for six years and still going strong.

All with the caveat that I never wash turnout rugs. They get dried out and the mud knocked off before storage but nothing else

Reading with interest. Have a 4-year-old Standardbred trotter who is still growing into himself. Narrow in the chest and quite slim, bigger bum. He’s about 15.1hh and fits a Masta 5’9” 0g turnout at the moment (been very wet here in West Yorkshire). He definitely has a thinner coat than some and feels the cold.

What weight rug do people tend to go for once it’s colder? Some seem quite excessive and I’d hate to over rug. Fit-wise, I think I’ve seen Shires Tempest recommended for narrow shoulders but only 600d I believe…

The shires Thypoons are pretty good for the price. They are a slim fit at the chest.

My horses have been out in all the horrendous rain we have had over the last week. One in an Amigo bravo 1200D and one in a Rhino 1200D, both no fill. Neither of them leaked at all. I think it is the denier of the rug that really makes the difference. 600D rugs, whatever the make, are cheaper but rarely really waterproof.

I always swore by Weatherbeta, but the last one I bought (the one with removable inner)curled up alround the edges and the material is absolutely awful and goes like cardboard when wet. The fittings have all been replaced and overall quality is not great. I have had Swish which were great for one winter then leaked and the linings fell to bits. Derby house were ok as long as it didn’t rain. I have moved to Horsewear Rambos and buy secondhand when I can, and my boy has a Wug as it eliminates the need for a neck and it seems much more comfortable across his withers.
